on my integra...it is a sport mode. shift points are at a little bit higher rpm's. the button allows you to hold it in 3rd gear(s3). great for climbing mtns, driving thru canyons, or getting on the highway. you don't always want the trans to upshift on you while accelerating. i use it for engine braking too. switch to 4th gear and you should be in overdrive (the 90-93 integras don't have overdrive due to gearing ratio), which will be equal to cruising in "D".

edit: to use it, you pull the lever back from D to S, and then use a little button on the side of the shift lever to switch between 3rd and 4th.
to save from tearing up your trans, never downshift when the revs are above 3k rpm. it may not cause any damage, but it is a good rule of thumb.

than no. but, you can hold a gear by pushing the lever through each gate. the transmission is electronically controlled, so it won't hurt it.
it would have to read PRNDS2

hmm i kinda understand what you mean about pushing the lever... :S. the car keeps up a lot quicker on D3 but it redlines quicker than D4 and wastes more gas since its at a lower gear.

if you switch from D to S...it will go into S3 first. it won't give you more power. but under full throttle, it'll take you to redline. but, if you go to race someone, it'll kick down a gear, most likely from 4th to 3rd.

The S3/S4 button is sort of a semi-semi-automatic transmission control. The "S" mode allows the tranny to upshift at a higher RPM. Going from "D" to "S" will downshift into 3rd gear. You have to press the S3/S4 button to go into S4. If done correctly, and your timing is right, pressing the S3/S4 button just after moving the gear lever into "S" will keep the tranny in 4th gear. You can also use the button to shift up & down between 3rd gear and 4th gear on the twisties. Obviously, leaving the tranny in "S" mode will use more gas than just leaving it in "D".

I miss this feature that I had in my 1989 Legend coupe. I wish my Lexus had it.

Yup. Sort of like a manual that only allows you to shift between 3rd & 4th. The "S" mode does not make the car faster per se, but only makes the upshift points come at a higher RPM, and faster kickdowns. Did you get the car recently?

You can leave the transmission in "S" mode all day if you so wish. S4 and "D" are the same, except for the shift points. The "S" mode just uses a different computer algorithm for shift points, a "sport" mode. Leaving it in "D" will give you the best fuel economy, "S" mode will give you better drivability, as the upshifts will come at higher RPMs, at the cost of fuel economy. The engine produces peak power around 4000rpm. If you want to race someone, just put it into "S". I loved the sound of the engine under full throttle. I really miss the old girl. But I got a new intake for my ES300, and now it sounds better than my Legend's under full throttle...also the ES300 is much faster than my Legend used to be!

PS.....if you really want to go fast, try to find one of those turbo Legend engines *210hp, I think) that were sold in Japan, Australia & Europe. Only about 2500 were made so they may be hard to find. If you REALLY want to go fast, *try* to find the twin-turbo engine! Only 250 were made in 1989 for the Japanese market, all coupes. Those things had 277hp!!! Still the second most powerful road car made by Honda, at least until the 300hp Acura RL coming in the fall!

No, but you go down to S, it'll downshift from 4th to 3rd.
i don't recommend downshifting too often manually.

It won't hurt your tranny per se, but it will cause more wear and tear because the tranny is shifting. Like I said before, you can shift into "S" while driving but still stay in 4th gear. You just have to get your timing right. Just after shifting into "S", press the S3/S4 button. You have to press it BEFORE the tranny shifts into 3rd. If you do that, the tranny will stay in 4th. There is a bit of a delay before the tranny shifts, so do it in that time. Press the button as soon as the "D" light in the dash goes out and before the "S3" light comes on.

okay well.. yesterday i was driving on D and i just wanted to see what would happened if i shifted it into S3, and so i did. the thing went to redline!! hahahaha it was coooooooool, but i didnt do it at an exact point like before 3rd gear or whatever. and Senna, you said i should right?

so shift it into S3, then click S4 BEFORE my car goes to 3rd gear right?

well yeah.. i ran a like 92 hatch yesterday with mods in the S3 mode.. and i kept up with him head to head, i think i woulda pulled him if there wasnt a car slowing down in front of me.. i love this option

no offense, but how much longer can you beat a dead person with a stick.

we've answered your question many times, you just keep asking the same question in a different form.

just put it in s3 and switch to s4 when you're ready.

its called trial and error, and driving experience.

the performance of the car is not going to change with the shift algorithm. it is using the same amount of power, just at different points in the rpm range.

If you floor it, the tranny will shift up the same in either D or S modes. The S mode just makes the tranny more responsive while driving around town. Drive the car around, experiment. The 0-60 times for the auto is around 9-10 seconds. Not very fast by current standards, but not bad for its day. Gotta love the engine note though!
