Flames shooting out of intake?
Today I went to the drags and saw an EK hatch spitting flames out of its intake (mounted in headlight). This hatch supposedly has a LS/VTEC swap with a 4 fogger direct port nitrous system, it previously was only an LS swap (w/direct port nitrous). I don't know if he used, but from reliable sources this was one of his 1st runs out with the new head. His run was ***, 15 something. Just wondering if anyone else has seen something similar/knows what's going on? I was about to bring my digicamcorder today but decided against it.

Nitrous by itself is not flammable, but remember the nitrous kit would also have a fuel line mixing fuel with the nitrous. A friend of mine had this happen to him, it blew his intake off.
ever seen flames shoot out from the muffler ? yeah i went to the track one day with a different program ecu and ran it and my friends said they seen fire shoot out from my muffler so i am guessing my car is runny very rich...i ran a 13.6 with that ecu p28 rechip skunk2 program. Here we have drag strip open till 12am sometimes 1am.

the car is not tuned properly and is running way to rich and the timing is also most likely off. it needs to be tuned or he will most likely end up melting crap... the car should not backfire through the manifold. Basically what is happening is ignition is occuring to late and has not finished before the intake valve opens (maybe to much overlap incorrectly adj. cam gears maybe?) this allows fire to enter the intake manifold and if the nitrous setup sprays fuel into the runners it will ignite and can shoot out the intake.
Ok, obviously the person running this setup is using too much n20, hence it is a wet system and is easy to overkill. Somehow, the n20 is being sparked and burning where it can -- where oxygen is available -- out side of the car.
I've have never heard of anything like this. This bastard is lucky to be alive.

nitrous is an Oxidizer
it does not burn it does nothing other than supply more oxygen for combustion allowing more fuel to burned.
quote from HSW.com
"When you heat nitrous oxide to about 570 degrees F (~300 C), it splits into oxygen and nitrogen. So the injection of nitrous oxide into an engine means that more oxygen is available during combustion"

Same thing happens when nitro funny cars backfire through the intake assembly. I seen one car turn into a fire bomb halfway down the track. Destroyed the blower and huge flames shot out from the butterflies. Became a ball of fire going down the track. Granted nitromethane is more volitile but the same principle applies. Cool light show at night but sucks for the guy at the wheel, especially the funny car drivers cause all the flames are right in front of them.

True, true. As some others have agreed in this post. I'm gonna have to agree with this.

He was running slicks too.
And to answer other questions, yes I have seen flames shoot out of an exhaust, in person and on video, on RX-7's. As for video's and pics, sorry but like I said, I forgot to bring my digicamcorder which also takes still pics. It was pretty amazing though that the small fireball in his filter occured for like 3-5 seconds! FlAmEZ LiKe Wh0a!
