how do external wastegates work ( search used, bashers go elsewhere)
ok, from looking at internaly wastegated turbos i see that you have 2 holes, and i'm assuming that once the turbine reaches its limit, the other little hole opens up and lets out the exess gas
however, both gases go into your exhaust
but what about an external wastegate??? if its external where da hell does the exess gas go?? i'm a little stumped
thanks.

external wastegates work the same way as internal, they bleed off exhaust before it gets to the turbo to regulate turbine speed. You can either dump it to the atmosphere or back into the exhaust after the turbo.

If you route it back into the exhaust be sure to do it at least 18 incehes past the turbo. This is so the exhaust doesnt create unwanted back pressure.

dumping the WG gasses out of the exhaust can effectively give you more peak flow after you reach your boost limit and the WG is dumping off a certain % or the gasses to atmos. People even convert internal gates to dump externally i assume for this reason, maybe the sound too

From my experiences, emissions usually aren't an issuer if you go aftermarket turbo anyway

so then, you would have your external wastagate thingy, and then weld a pipe over it and back into the exhaust a little bit further down the line?
where would the cat go? after the whole thing connects back together again?

Here is a pic of my external WG.
On my car, the small stainless pipe carries the exhaust from the WG and releases it to the atmosphere below. This pipe could be connected to the exhaust pipe, before the cat, as seen a few posts above.

That's if your putting a lot of load on the engine and making max boost (If running a boost controller that opens the wastegate right when it hits the max boost setting) or close to max boost (Running without a boost controller)

Just like that.. I can't even explain it. When my friend's wastegate opens on his teg it sounds almost mustangish and heads turn like something is about to explode.
