Default Is it the synchros or the clutch that needs to be changed?

1995 integra LS
107,000 miles on it. I believe the stock clutch is still in there, but heres the problem. When Im in second gear and throw it in neutral and let the revvs drop to 1000 RPM and try to get it back into 2nd gear it wont let me. I have to revv up the RPMS to about 3000 then it will engage. High RPM shifting from 1st to 2nd gear isnt affected. There arent any grinds when doing that so I doubt its the synchros. But what do you think?

Sounds like the synchros to me. My clutch still works damn good and I have the same problem as you. The only difference is that sometimes my car won't let me get into first gear after completely stopping. I have to rev the engine a little and move it into gear. There are some more threads concerning this issue. I'd run a search through hondatech concerning synchros.

I've done a search and found that synchros going out is related to high speed revving and a crunch sound from the tranny. My case is at low RPMs engaged at 2nd gear going to neutral and then unsucessfully trying to going back into 2nd gear. Still think its the synchros?

"The synchros allow smooth shifts because they match the speed of the gearbox to the engine automatically. When they go out, you'll get grinding noises when selecting a certain gear and it'll be difficult or impossible to move the shifter into that gear, especially during a downshift."

This was a quote from a mechanic website. So yes, I believe that it can be bad synchros. I've heard that using a good transmission fluid can sometimes help. There are a lot of people that recommend RedLine fluid. I'd definately try to find help from some of the more experienced people in this forum...like maybe Dustin, he seems to know his stuff real well. I'd be curious to find more answers too. From what I've heard though, when your synchros are bad, they gotta be replaced or something.

but before doing a major work, change the to MTL fluid and try it again, you might see some improvement, especially if you didn't do it in a while...

also when shopping for tranny go with a GSR or Si coupe or ITR so you get shorter gearing...

My recemdation is, when this happens to you throw it into 3rd so that the whole box aligns then you should be able to put it into second. My car won't let me put it down to 1st some times so I would have to rev to about 5g's I think then it will drop right in. Good for AutoX you know. I had to do the same thing when I had the stock LS clutch in my car so I wouldn't be suprised if yours worked the same way.
