hey guys,
I am usually in the civic forum but I am helping out a friend. My friend has a 99 GSR and she has no idea what kind of car that was given to her. Well she asked me to take a look at it to see what was wrong. She recently had her car serviced for a rattling at certain RPM's. The local acura service department looked at it and said the gasket on the cat conv. was screwed and replaced the gasket. Within a day or two the rattling came back. Im not use to tegs but I was thinking of getting one of the ebay cat conv. for 40 bucks. Then swapping it out with new gaskets also??? Any other possibilities that could be the cause? She also has a check engine light but I havent had enough time to do the paperclip test. I didnt know if a check engine light could come from the cat being screwed or not (that sounds bad).
Thanks

second that.

Screwed up cat can cause a CEL, since it's OBD-2. Read the code first, don't just change the cat without knowing.
For the vibration, after ruling out all the exhaust heat shields, another possibility is the A-pipe. I don't know if Civics are like this, but Integras have double-wall A-pipe. The inner pipe either works loose or warps, then it buzzes against the outer pipe. It drove me nuts - sounded like a loose heat shield. That's an expensive pipe, so it was an excuse to buy a header...

If i heard the rattle i could tell you.
You either have a plugged cat and the honeycomb mesh inside is broken and rattling. This is usally from running too rich.
Or you have the common dreaded heatshield problem.
If it is the heatshield you dont need to replace it, just remove and toss it.
If its the cat dont forget to get rid of the heat shields when you replace since
your under there anyway.

thanks guys,
my friends at class and will be back here later. So i have to wait a little to get a chance to actually look at it. I was able to drive it last night and it sounds fine until certain rpms like 3200 when the rattling is like a popping sound. Then I would raise the RPM a little and it would calm down. It fluctuates between a buzzing and popping sound at different rpms though. So I will mess around with it in a little bit. I will keep ya up to date.

"UM, yes I think your warranty is up by 6,000 miles and the rattling you hear is actually coming from your engine. So just to be safe we need to swap your engine. Your total will be somewhere in the 1,000.00 to 6,000.00 dollar price range. Let me see your keys and we will start right away." quote the drunk acura mechanic that knows all
I just made that up i didnt actually take this car back to the acura dealership.
