Please help guys !!! check engine light then VTEC wont kick in!!!! Help!!
hey whats up guys, I have a 92 GSR, b17a with type r pistons, TYpe R cylinder head complete with type R cams, Type R intake manifold and Type r trhrottle body.
I was driving with no problems and my check engine light comes on, then I notice that my speedometer was not working. I tried to get it into Vtec but it wouldnt crossover. SO Im experiencing my speedometer not working, check engine light on, and VTEC not kicking in. These things have to be related cause they all happened at once right?. Oh yeah one more thing, After the check engine light comes on, I could turn the car off and the light wont come back on for like 3 or 4 minutes of driving. During the time the light is not on, VTEC kicks in but still my speed ometer wont work, but like I said after like 3 minutes light comes back on and I am unbable to get into VTEC again. Please guys any help is always appreciated. Thanks alot

welcome to the world of obd1. typically when your ecu stores a code it operates in open loop mode, vtec doesn't operate in open loop mode. so the advice i have for you is to jump the service connector under the glove box and see how many times the cel blinks. this will tell you what code it is. most likely it has to do with your speed sensor or distributor crap. that's my guess judging from the fact your speedo doesn't operate.
as a side note, vtec burns up oil. If you dont have oil in the engine, your vtec wont kick in. Keep an eye on your oil and check it regularly, especially when your racing a lot!
As soon as I noticed VTEC not kicking in, the first thing I checked was to see if I have oil. The oil level is perfect though. So Its definitely not that. Its not my disrtibutor cap either cause its newgot a whole new distributor from the dealer which was 360 bucks, I also got new cap wires, ignitor, coil, the whole setup. cost me like 600 bucks for the whole setup from Acura Dealership. that really hurt
A similar thing happened to me in my 2000 GS-R, basically it was a short. Check your fuses and see if the speedo fuse is burned out. On my car, the o2 sensor was hitting the shift linkage metal to metal and shorted out the speedo fuse, so my speedometer was dead and the CEL came on.
Of course, there are a million other possibilities too. Good luck!

thats a good possibility because for some reason my horn fuse keeps blowing out, and I noticed my brake lights arent working. I havent investigated why the brake lights dont work but maybe it could be a short too. Ill have to check it out

Vtec will not work if ECU doesn't know the speed of your car thats why your probably getting a VSS (vehical speed sensor) code. Check your speedo cable. I had the same problem with my 93 GS-R, just replaced my broken speedo cable and everything was fine.

Well i know one reason why vtecs not working and your gettin the CEL, vtec works off take your vehcile speed along with rpm, oil preasure, throttle position all into consideration when its ingaging. You might have a bad speedo sensor, thats what sends the signal to your gauge also and your ECU, if you dont believe me, disconnect the plug at the speed sensor at the transmission and drive it, i sure one you going to get a check engine light for that and also the vtec wont engage, trust me i tried it to keep my miles showing low on the obdometer and that what happened to me. But yes also it could be a fuse too, i check around for a lose connection or someplace were your grounding out a wire like on the exhuast or something.

92 Gs-R i believe is a cable tranny so its just a cable plugged into the tranny, theres no plug to a sensor.

i seriously doubt it's your fuses. i've seen lots of cars come in like that and it always ends up being the vss or related wiring.
ok so its a cable then but i am sure theres some kind of sensor from the transmission to the ECU for vtec, if not i guess i dont know what i am talking about when it comes to this model, I have a 00 Si and thats how it works for my car. I still look around for lose wires or grounding out somewere.
