Does oil burning mean new rings or re-hone?
Gotta get a machine shop to hone the cylinders. You can't just put in new rings.
Don't let someone tell you that they can use a drill with the stones and rehone. It never works out. It'll smoke like a chimney.

good call.
new rings -> rehone
rehone -> new rings. (why reuse old piston rings that may leak again
)
burning oil doesnt necessarily mean your compression rings are shot.
compression + leakdown i'd say is your next step
but what the hell do i know. i'm a noob.

I sure hope not cause alot of R's are burning oil.

Well there are three places where oil can enter the combustion chamber. First it can get in though that breather hose that connects the valve cover to the intake. Second thing is that the valve seals are bad thus allowing oil to drip down and get burn along with the air/fuel mixture. Lastly the oil rings can get worn out and allow oil to get up in to the combustion chamber. So you have to figure out where oil is leaking.
If you are going to replace the rings you will have to get the cylinders re-honed.
Well I would try out a heavier weight oil like 10w30 instead of the recommended 5w30. Mobil one seems to burn alot more then Castrol so you might switch oil brands and see if that will fix the problem.

I'm under the impression that this is not 'normal.'
If this is the case, what is the cause? Also what can be done about it?

Yup, i had an oil burning problem at higher rpms, you would see oil when im gunning it and when i switched from mobil 1 5w30 to castrol syntec 10w30 it hasn't burned any since...

Most everyone here burns oil... would new rings do the job? ... or will one need to re-hone the cylinder as well?</TD></TR></TABLE>
coule be the oil control rings, compression rigns, valve seals, or a head gasket leak.
Do like stated above, run thicker oil unless it's unbearably bad

If your going to get new rings then you may as well get new compression rings and valve seals done also, it'll save you having to do it again in the future, and to replace the oil rings requires a fairly intensive teardown anyway, so save your self the bother later and do the whole lot now. My B18C used to burn approx 6 liters per 5000miles, it turned out the rings were shot, i just had everything done at the one time, now it uses less than a quart between services (5K) and thats with a lot of top end revs
V-tec engines consume oil when driven hard regardles of the type or manuf. of oil you use.
When I do a track day, about 300km, I may consume 1 litre of oil and everything checks out. Then I may go on vacation and drive 3 500 km and not consume a drop of oil (girlfriend doesn't enjoy v-tec power while cruising thru villages).
Last week i did a leak down test and compression test and here is what i found......zero leak and between 185 to 195 compression on all cylinders.
All this and I have 93000km on the odo and about 90 track events since 98.
Don't worry about oil consumption, it is normal. What you can do is set the level midway on the dipstick instead of full up, this reduces comsumption in my experience.
