97 GST - BOV problems, help. (candyoffvalve)
my friend got a stock 97 gst last week and a few days ago i installed a turboxs rfl bov and an injen intake. everything was running fine for 3 days then last night my friend calls me saying that his car is fuc#ed so i tell him to drive it over and meet me at my house.
so anyways he calls me back saying he is stuck on the way over. so i get dropped off to where his car is and drive it home no problems? once i pull in my driveway i give it a little gas in neutral to make it blow off and let go and when the cars RPM's are lowering it shoots down and dies. so i look under his engine bay to make sure that everything is still exactly how i left it when the install was completed and everything was fine..... here is the problem
after inspecting everything i realize that there is some red goo that dried on the outside of the blowoff valve and i say "that looks like candy" my friend laughs at me. so i lick my finger and run it over the red spot and taste it.. guess what..its SUGAR? so then i uninstalled everything and dissassembled the blowoff valve completely and cannot find any trace of where that came from...
so then i ask my friend when he opened his hood last and he tells me he hasnt opened it since i did the installs? anyone ever hear of anything like this ever? no we werent eating redhots or drinking fruit punch during the install .
anyways once the car was put back to stock the problem that it had with dying in neutral after a little punch of the throttle was over?
cliffnotes - Why would the eclipse die in neutral after punching the gas?
- why was there candy in the blowoff valve?

Why would the eclipse die in neutral after punching the gas? because it is a mitsubishi, duh. jk dude. ya i dont have an answer for either question. were vaccume lines hooked up correctly? did a coupler come loose in ic piping?
that's one fucked up problem....
You may have to tighen up your BOV, because it may be letting air in at idle.
on a DSM this will cause significant problems, because the air for idle is not being metered. This is why stock BOV is re-routed back to the intake (keep metered air in the intake)
If it dies like it did (revving it and hearing the bov etc.) what happens is the engine goes rich, because you let out already metered air that it thinks it injested, so it meteres more air.. and you can see the problem.
This is one reason why on first gens if you try and vent the stock bov to atmosphere, you pretty much have to crush it to work well without dying out on you (lets air in at idle) but in his case with the aftermarket spring you can just tighten it..
As far as the candy.... someone had to have dropped candy in the charge pipe, or in the BOV. that simple.
Cliffnotes: 2gdsm bov recirculates, aftermarket releases metered air = goes rich after BOV Vent.
heh
So you licked its bov and it tasted good, huh?? hahaha

Thats what is weird though, absolutely no candy or food was around the car at all, and no one has even seen under the hood except justin who installed it. And yes, the candy did taste good
thanks for the help lazerus. no it didnt taste good but i could tell it was sweet. it was weird because it looked like it dried like a sticky goo and was very hard...... i thought that it would make it rich also because it wouldnt be rerouted into the intake, but when he bought it at the store the guy told him it wouldnt be a problem.
so i see 2 possible ways of fixing the problem;
1) put more discs in the blowoff valve to tighten the spring
2) exchange rfl for a r34 bov and reroute it into the intake?
what do you think

where did you buy the blow off valve? Maybe one of the packing people was eating some candy and drooled inside - when it heated up the now hardened candy laced drool melted and oozed out.
Its really funny, but I'm sure it wouldn't be if it happened to me - goodluck!

my old turbo nissan (MAF) ran like sh#t when i vented my bov (1st gen DSM) to atmosphere. the AF was around 9.0-10.0:1 at idle...if it idled. and drivability in between shifts was always entertaining

locktite tastes sweet and comes in a translucent red ...and ya, venting to atmosphere is not a great setup but the sound is mad stunna so most people deal with it.

listen to javier and lazerus.
Eclispes use the MAF compared to our hondas using MAP's.
Gas mileage goes to hell if u dont recirculate the bov because the ecu see's air going into the engine.... it "disapears" cuz its vented to the atmosphere so the extra gas going into the engine for that air is wasted...
recirculate the one ur friend has or get one that you can recirculate or prepare to open your friends wallet for gas money.

i only had a few spoonfuls...
..jeez
psileepeR - yea i figured it would run a lot better with the recirculated BOV, but the problem is already solved, traded the turboxs rfl for a turboxs type-r34 so we can recirculate.
