carsound died. which cat now?
My 94006 just died a couple of days ago (the honeycomb is loose and rattling). Anybody has an suggestions on which catalytic to run now? I have a straight pipe but don't really want to run it (noisy and smells) since my car is a daily driver. Anybody has any suggestions on what to run now? I read a couple of posts here that the 54000 series may be more reliable(?) but I don't know if I want to run a carsound again. I only had about 4k on this one.
thanks

I had the same problem, it died in a short amount of time, I just went with a test pipe while I tried to get the Cat replaced under warranty but just got the run around from carsound and ipsracing so I gave up and ahve not gotten a new one. I decided to tune and see how much power the test pipe would give me. All i have is JDM 4-1 and the cat went bad. I am interested in a SMS cat when I am going to get a new one, else gutt the bad cat and say F*@% it.
I'm running about 11.5 compression with cams and the usual bolt ons. No, I never ran race gas as this car is a daily driver car. I might be running slightly on the rich side (plugs look normal though) but I don't think it's to the point in which it would destory the cat. The funny thing is that the honeycomb is still in one piece but it just looks like it unwedge itself from the housing. I notice this started when we had a couple of really hot days up here in the bay area.
I'm using the 93506 cat now for all the 17" applications and haven't had one fail or a CEL. Also this is the cat on George Knighton's car that puts out 192 whp with stock cams and pistons so it doesn't hinder flow.
1.7na- same thing, the comb is whole, it's like it came loose where it is supposed to be weleded or attached to the shell of the cat.
SMSP - what's the price on that cat?

Thanks SMSP! How long has this 93506 model been out? I'm just wondering if you haven't seen one fail because it's a new model or the reliably has been proven.

another note on the 93000 tho, its huge, and u may have to cut some of the heat shield off in order for it not to rattle... but my solution to not cutting is moving my exhaust (apex n1) a little more to the right...

It's not a new model. I never asked how long they have been building them but the 93006 (same as the 93506) has been in the catalog for at least as long as I've had a catalog which is a few years. The 94006 and obdII 94066 are rated for upto 5.9L engines where the 93506 is rated for 7.5L. So it's their model for the big trucks so I expect it's been around for a long time.
The 94006 and 94066 cat use (2) 2" thick bricks and the 93506 use (2) 3" thick bricks. I believe the shell of the 93506 is also a little heavier and yes it is a tad wider than the 94006/66 so a little trimming maybe in order. Willard was the first customer to purchase the 93506 sometime last year and he runs it at all the HPDEs also and hasn't had a problem.

No issues at all.
Info:
A little over 10,000 miles and 8 track days. I plan to put a few more miles on the car this weekend.
A little trip to Watkins Glen for a 2-day driving event.
TUNE the car.

i've got close to 50K out of mine.. about 20K with hondata, if i didn't go turbo, it could still go for some time.. but i'm replacing with another carsound.. cause they're cheap.
I've read a couple of threads about this rattle problem. Some guys just put a band clamp around the cat. Try searching or posting a question about clamping the cat.
it took about 2000 miles for my random technology cat to give out but i lost the reciept for it.
had to gut it out i need a cat bad it sounds like crap. hollow!!!
