Default to Gutt cat, or not?

have a 3" carsound cat 94000... would it be benficial to gutt it for some HP, or would some turbulence occur (resulting in worse air flow)?

NOT....that is a high flow cat.

Just take the cat off and make a test pipe.

i live in the wonderful state of california. i don't think the test pipe is an option.

if you gut it your car will sound like it doesn't have a cat and you'll probably get pulled over, especially with a bit of smoke comin out at WOT...I wouldn't bother, really. It'll pass visual, but if you have to get tested again you'll need to buy a new one. http://www.testpipe.com has straightpipes that have stock cat heat shields, if you really want to do it right.

Someone posted cfm charts of a bunch of cats and test pipes and the 3'' carsound cat was so close to the 3'' test pipe is wasnt even funny. The test pipe flowed like 20 cfm more if my memory serves me correctly.

what about gutting stock cats? Is it better to just cut the flanges off and weld a test pipe in? Does the larger hallowed out chamber of a gutted cat create turbuance? Atleast thats what I am beinging to get from ther posts on here

I havent actually seen a dyno of a gutted cat but I've been told that it often decreases flow.

the butt dyno seemed to pick up nice gains upon gutting the stock cat.

What? If the carsound/magnaflow cat flows almost as well as a test pipe then you can't have worse flow from taking out the restriction.

I would not gut the cat if you are in CA. Get a test pipe.

i figured a gutted cat would do better. the whole "bottleneck" turbulence concept makes me wonder though.
