b18a/b lets get the truth out here.. what tranny is the best?
ok so i'm thinking the SOHC ZC isn't gonna cut it for me soon.. finding that b18 is relatively inexpensive and good to find parts for.. so I'm going with that.. what tranny is better for N/A? I've heard both sides .. ls tranny= lower end tourqe better and also b16 just runs through the gears real quick :-).. anyone have some time slips or anything comparing just the trannys.. not real interested in LSD info and things.. whats better for the 1/4 .. the highway... top end bottom end?? Lets hear what ya got
the B16 trans is the best if you are interested in making your car faster. if you want to have a comfortable car to drive that will be quiet, and at low revs on the freeway, get the ls trans.
B16 trans= short gearing, fast acceleration, high revs on the highway.
ls trans= long gearing, slow acceleration (unless you have a turbo and find that you can't keep any traction with your 550 horsepower.) low revs on the highway, a little better on gas.
once you get the b16 trans and get used to it, you will never want a different gearbox in your car.
all hail the B16 trans.

To bad the R/S ratio sucks on B18a/b s and B20s.... Not good for revving for a long period of time IMO. Great for B16s B18C/5 tho.
just my .02 cents

I have a B18a with I/H/E and a J1 b16a tranny. When I ran it at the track I ran a 15.8, corrected for sea level it was a 14.7. It has automatic cams in it and I have heard that 5 speed motors are about 2-3 tenths faster. So that would put me in the 14.5 range at sea level. When I was at the track there was a CRX with a B18A with cams, I/H/E, MSD, fuel rail, and some other small mods. He ran a 15.7 so I was only one tenth slower. He had an LS tranny. I was on slicks and had a 2.0 60 ft where he was on street tires. I know with low amounts of HP the b16a tranny helps a lot. Top speed is 110 redlined in 5th. Its fun but if you plan on any long free way drives it would suck. If you get into high HP, even if you are doing an all motor setup and make around 200, I have heard that the trannys will not make much difference. It will eventually hurt you because your traps will be limited. Plus he gearing will make it very hard to get traction. I think it has helped me lots becasue I run what most B16A EF's with the same mods do and I have about 30 less HP.
B16A transmissions on LS motors don;t make for good engine longevity. The LS is not a very rev-worth motor.

i always think it's funny when i see people talk about r/s ratio on the B18A/B. it has an r/s ratio of 1.52, just .02 from the GSR. I spin my LS to 8k on more than a daily basis. and it has a stock valvetrain with JG1001 cams. never had a problem. the LS can be spun safely to 8500rpm. anything over than that and you start running into issues with the floating rocker arms. as long as the bottom end is in good shape, you'll never have to worry about it.
well from my expirence with trannies id have to say my old hatch with jdm y1 was definatly the best tranny i had on the ls. It sat at about 4400rpms at 80mph. And was much faster...i ran that set up for a long time and never had any problems
b16 trannies are worthless on ls motors with stock redline. I already top out 4th gear in the quarter with my ls tranny. Shifting into another gear is just going to **** you up worse. Bottom line, unless your ls revs to 8 grand...keep the ls tranny..

My B16 redlines in 5th gear at 105mph. Highway cruising is well above 5000 RPMs at 70mph.
