Default once and for all...how accurate are the autometer a/f gauges?

i have asked this before and never received a straightforward answer and mainly speculation on the accuracy of these gauges. so, should i worry if i'm boosting and it shows that i'm running lean or is just a light show?

i have an autometer a/f gauge... the downside i see to it is that it does not give you a detailed reading of your a/f mixture which is necessary for tuning...

but it does get its job done telling you if you're running rich at wot or what not

it is not good for very much except a ballpark reading. not meant for tuning or for anyhigh performance use. i have a standard a/f gauge in my car which is nice... but when you tune, you want to use a wideband lambda meter. these o2 sensors operate on a 5volt signal which gives a much more detailed range of o2 accuracy than the standard 1 volt signal sent by the stock sensor..

so in a nutshell

standard... good for day to day in car use to see whats happening NOT for tuning

wideband... a must for use on a dyno while tuning car

mmmmkay?

I agree with TurboR616. The Autometer is what I currently have in my car. It basically will let you know if you are running rich or lean under WOT conditions. It will not give you an actual A/F Ratio.

If you really want to tune using an A/F gauge, I would recommend the setup by Greddy. This gauge uses its own O2 sensor, and will display the actual A/F ratio. A must for proper tuning. It also has a memory feature. The thing will set you back over $200 though.

If you just want a ballpark figure get the Autometer.

Personally, I plan on changing mine to the Greddy real soon.

the greddy is NOT a wideband o2 gauge.... the gauge itself is adjustable for use with a wideband sensor... howeever it doesnt come with one.. just a regular ol 1 volt.

i use one on my car.. and when i see it run lean and stay lean.. im assuming that it's not good. it runs rich and bounces all the time but when it hits lean, i let up! dont know how acdcurate it is.. but it wasnt wrong before... when i had fuel pump problems.. it ran lean and the air/fuel showed me the corresponding result..

Actually, the greddy is not compatible with a wide band sensor.
They recommend you calibrate it against one however.
But since it doesnt have temp correction its not as good as a true wideband

Only use the a/f gauge at WOT, pointless otherwise. Best is to use the a/f gauge in conjunction with an EGT.

Seems reasonably priced.
I wonder how it compares with the other brands(eg motec, autronic, etc)

It actually came in handy when I was adjusting my fuel map with closed loop and open loop. If it was too rich on closed loop either on idle or cruising it would tell me so I changed it whatever needed to be changed. It helped a lot. So for now Im gonna go with what I have until i get my 3" downpipe and go to dyno and tune it with a wideband o2.

thanks for all the responses. has anyone tried the gadgetseller gauges at the link above? they are supposed to modify your current gauges for WOT readings. i wonder how accurate they make these gauges.
