Ok, So i bought my turbo off someone(here) and it hadnt been used before. It sat in my room since then and today I went to go fab my dp with a buddy and he started spinning the blades(while it was on its side..sitting on the inlet) Ive got a big inlet so nothing was touching the blades and he would spin it and it would make a squeek noise when it would reach a certain point in the revolution. My heart sank and it was like someone rubbing their nails down a chalk board(thats the feeling I got). So we experimented and with the turbo sitting properly (t3 flange up)this noise does NOT happen. It only happens when it is laying on its side.
We compared the shaft play between my turbo(ball bearing gt30) to his (t3/t4 NON bb) and his shaft really has no play(brand new). it has the slightest and I mean slightest movement(like really nothing)Mine on the other hand DOESNT have much either but compared to his its a lot(this on a small scale mind you since things are tight in there)
So, its making this weird noise(only when turned on its side..its something squeeking something) but works fine(i think) when sitting normal. and my shaft seems ubnormally lose. This is a BALL BEARING gt series turbo. is it normal for it to have slightly more shaft play? I have it up the wazzooo with some of this stuff(pump fuc*ked before I even used it) and if this thing is fucked...i dunno.
Im really stressed, scared and pissed off as this thing isnt exactly a junkyard 14b.
HELP. Please.
Anyone have insight on this?(cheapturbo?)?

my turbo squealed but when oil ran through it it stopped. put some oil in the oil hole see it that'll stop it.

 

If there is a lot of play, then i would have it rebuilt...

 

Has any of the bearings had oil on them yet? Your problem possibly could be that the blades were spun playing around with it to much, and they have gotten to the point were they need some lubricant. The shaft play doesnt sound good. You'd have to have a feeler gauge in there and find out what the play is, then speak with Garret to find out the clearances.

 

To me at first it seemed ok.
But after seeing the other turbo(t3/t4) it seemed like too much.
The squeel doesnt sound like the inside but almost like a blade touching somewhere(BUT I COULD BE WRONG) although I did put some oil in (through the return) and spin the blades a bit to give it some sort of lubing up.
ack... this is really pissing me off.
I havent even used the damn thing yet.(its never been used by anyone)

well isnt this just wonderful.

 

when I got my turbo I was playing with it and found out that if you spin the blades the right way, the blades could actually graze the metal inside and make a noise like you are describing. I was pissed and wanted to see if something was wrong with it but I just said **** it and used it anyway. No problem for about 8 months...

thats the thing..when spun sitting the proper way its fine.
its only when you lay it on its side(ive never seena turbo mounted that way EVER on ANY CAR) so I assumed its just the way its designed.
cheapturbo sent me a pm and said it might be not right.

 

Put a little oil in the feed hole and let it sit for a little while see if it still squeals.. is there any resistance when you spin it?

 

it has nothing really to do with the inside..
this squeel is coming from the blades.
when you turn it on its side it DOES NOT spin AS freely as if it is sitting properly but I took this as being a ball bearing thing..
If its messed its gonna be a huge kick in the nuts

 

when i had my turbo brand new it had basiclly no play but there was that lil play in it.. but once i put some oil in it.. the play was almost gone try that.. i would think ball barings would bake a noise if not lube correctly//

 

ok, there might be some hope here.
also note..the NOISE IS WHEN ITS LAYING ON ITS SIDE>>...like compressor inlet on the ground and exh up.
and it sounds external!(the noise)

this is a pretty expensive peice and well if its messed I dont know what im going to do.

 

Why dont you take the compressor housing off and see if the tops of the blades are touching (you should see the very tips of the blades being a little scuffed), or if it still squeels. If it still squeels with he oil in it and the compressor housing off it could be the bearing cartridge itself or it could be hitting in the hotside. You have to kinda think that it will have a cushion of oil that it is going to be riding on once you have it installed.. make sure to prime it before startup. My 16g that I put on the Talon had some shaft play *brand new* because it needs a little room for the oil film.

you're freakin out..

dont spin the blades unless the shaft is horizontal. and dont spin the blades at all if there is no lubricant in the turbo. the fins are touching the housing and its not a big deal.

well I wasnt the one who spun it sideways..I wont name names here but hes on this board(not very well known though).
i hope he reads this too

 

stop spinning it w/o lubrication. ball bearing will sqeal if you spins them w/o oil, especially it has been sitting for a long time. i would mount the turbo and do a test run.
