differential question
i pressed the ball-bearings fully onto the diff, but when i put the diff into the case now, it sits so low that the ring gear hits the case. am i missing a shim? (the ring gear is on properly.) i am using the Helm, but it calls for no shim with use of the conical bearings, and i am using the ball-bearings.

i called Quaife USA/Autotech, and they proved to be useless. they told me that i probably need a shim, but they could not tell me the factory spec length of the Quaife ATB from the bearing surface on the clutch side to the surface where the ring gear sits to compare with my actual piece (and a stocker), nor could they give me any tolerances from which to begin when trying shims. this comes as no surprise, since when i originally ordered it, they had no part # listed for ITR, and when i called them, they did not know which one i needed. then, when i ordered the wrong one (i chose the one for the b16a tranny, since the gear ratios were the same) and needed to send it back for an exchange, they refused to cover shipping.
Jeff, thanks for the reply. it is good to know that i am not the only one with this 'problem' ('misery loves company', right?), and while i have considered your 'solution', i'm concerned that the diff has to support such axial load (in turning), that eventually after a hard right turn over some fairly uneven road surface, i'll have more of a problem when the bearing bottoms out on the diff and the ring gear hits the case while turning at several thousand rpm (ouch).
i just spoke with someone who said that there are 2 differential ball-bearings of (2) varying thicknesses. i checked on http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org , from where i got my bearings, and they list the same size for all 94-01 Tegs and all trim lines. they also, however, show spacers not pictured in my B16a Civic or 94+ Teg Helms, in addition to the shims. anyone know anything about this?
problem solved, no thanks to the misinfo from Carland Acura (the site listed above, which lists all 94-01 Teg diff bearings as the same), and the (usual, from my experience) ignorance/apathy on part of Autotech/Quaife USA, and thanks to an archived Hybrid board article by Adrien Teo including the part # for the thicker (19.5mm) ITR specific diff bearings, about which Matt Jensen (Dropspeed) at PaynTech told me. thanks to Matt, and to Len at Baranco Acura for the hookup.

You know... I think I have some ITR bearings laying around! I orderd some bearings for my B16 and after putting it together, the inside bearing race is thicker than the outside. Soo.. when you install it, it sits further out. With those bearings, I couldn't close up the transmission case (diff assy was too thick with 'em).
Let me know if you want 'em (I lost the receipt and can't get a refund :-( I can verify the part number with you (I think) to make sure these are what you need. Otherwise, you can try those spacers between the bearing and diffcase.
You'll still need an 80mm shim to properly set the thrust clearance.

if you want to send me them to try, i'll cover shipping and pay with paypal. send me a pm or email and lmk. thanks.
