With lots and lots of cursing and swearing...
Did you disconnect the brake pedal from the master cylinder? You also have to pull the M/C forward into the engine bay, so that the pedal assembly can come free.
You'll also need to remove some the heater piping that is beneath your dash, so that the assembly can pull forward.

Yes it will come out with the steering column in but its also a bitch to get out, not sure if you have it out yet but there is one bolt under the air duct that you need to get. Good luck, its really a pain in the *** working in that area and not being able to get them out.

Well you can only hope it don't have to be done again, I have heard some breaking over time.

Yeah I put CRX Si pedals in my STD hatch for the neutral safety switch. God what a pain. I had the dash off at the time, but still.
I just got done about an hour and a half ago pulling out now my forth pedal assembly I dont think that they are that bad at all. And also you can get them out without pulling the M/C forward or pulling the dash or pulling the sterring column now let alone its much easier to pull it all out but its not necessary at all. I tried to do it with taking out the least amount as possible cause at the time I didnt think that I was going to completely rip my car apart oh how things soon change
