Removing engine
I know that it is easier to drop out the bottom, but when you don't have a lift.....
And installing it from the bottom can't be too easy in my garage

Somebody posted a thread in another forum about installing an engine from the bottom. Somebody mentioned using a couple of phone books to set the engine on, get the front end of the car as high as possible on the jack stands (take off the front bumper while you're at it), slide the motor underneath and get it in position, then bring the car down on the jack as far as you can. He said w/ the engine sitting on phone books you will be able to get the car low enough to get the side mounts lined up and get the bolts in it, and then you can lift it back up and put the rest of the mounts on. I'm guessing removing the engine would just be the reverse of that.

We did mine from the bottom (install and removal).
Slapped the engine/tranny on a dolly and moved the engine around as we dropped the body onto it.
You gotta have some pretty tall jackstands and jack to get it over the long block.
When I removed the engine, I already had the head off, so there wasn't a big clearance issue when removing it, only when putting it back in.

with no engine in the car, I bet 2-3 people could just lift up on the frame of the car in front while someone else raises the jackstands up.
However getting it back down would be another story.

has anybody ever pulled out through the top? I know removing from the bottom is easier, but how hard could it be to pull out the top? disconnect everything, and pull out the axles etc.....
i pulled mine out and dropped in the b18b through the top.
just make sure that the cherry picker is closer to the drvier side of the motor that way it will angle and the tranny will clear the frame.

We cracked my radiator pulling out my motor with the tranny still on. I know we shoulda taken the radiator off anyways, but we were trying to short change. Might as well take it off, makes it easier to transport it.
The guy that bought my D16 came over and put the whole damned thing in his Civic coupe; block, head, IM in the trunk and the tranny behind the passenger seat. If you can do it from the bottom still together, cool, but its only a couple of bolts and gives you a bit more room to move around.

If you have a hoistthen with the car on jack stands just use the hoist to lower the engine down and when you put it back in go from the bottom but use the hoist to pull it up instead of lowering the car. Just my $.02
