the fan switch is by your thermosat. there is two wires that run into a plug. unplug it and jump out the plug with a paper clip then tape it so the paper clip doesnt fall out

Had the same problem :

Thermostat changed didnt fix it...

It was the water pump, car wanted to overheat only while it was idle, guess the pump wasnt runing.. only when being revved on.

you need to tap the fan to an aux fuse that turns off when the keys are off

My car was doing the same thing too. Only overheating when idle, except my coolant reservoir would go empty about every 2 or 3 days, so i knew i either had a serious leak or needed a water pump. I went ahead and got timing belt as well

by doing that... actually the wires are two. 1-black and 2-green.. yes jump them with anything paperclip, wire etc... and the fan will turn on just when the switch is on. i mean second key klick. so when you turn off the car it will turn off too.
hope that helps.

Let it idle for 20 minutes or so, and just keep pouring in coolant. Bubbles should come up; add more coolant. If you swapped the thermoswitch you lost some coolant. You could have air pockets.
