Default Ignition retard

Somehow I'm under the impression that if I retard the ignition timing at the distributor manually, the ecu will learn over time and automatically correct the timing back to stock is this true?

No, I don't believe this is true.

If you set your base timing to 16 degrees (or lower or higher), it should stay put.

knock sensor will retard timing if there is pinging - but I don't think there is anything built into the system to advance timing - that would be dangerous.

I'm boosting 6.5psi on stock block. So its OK to retard at the dist a few degrees just to be safe?

That would be OK to do.

Cool! So how many degrees per pound of boost? 0.5, 0.75 ?

Your boost level should be related to your compression and intake charge temperature. I would leave your ignition timing stock and use a J&S Safeguard instead.
