how can you tell if the cam is tdc
get a long extension and pull out the # 1 plugwire and spark plug
put the extension in the hole and then get a 19mm or 17mm socket (motor pending) and ratchet and turn the motor over by hand and when the extension is at the highest point it can go bam TDC.
make sure the cam gear lines are lined up after you do this to make sure you have the cams in properly.

make sure your at TDC on the intake step and not the exhaust step when using the description above, the only way i know how to do this is by feeling the pressure build up as you crank the engine, it might say on the sproket though. gl
Take the valve cover off.
Get an extention or two.
Turn your cranck and watch the camgear.
The camgear will have a marking called UP or a arrow.
Make sure its at the top.
and you're set to tear your engine apart.
