Default How to reset the ECU after the car is to pass emissions test HELP!

Ok here's the story. I have a 99 Civic HB. ODB-II. I failed emissions test. I got a new cat put on. The old one was bad or something like that. Now after it is over, they are telling me they can't reset my ECU for me. And to top it off after I pick up the car, the speedomter and the milage doesn't work, but the gas and temp does. I went to the dealership and they wanted $100 to reset it for me. I heard I have to reset the monitors and drive it as a certain speed. Well i am all cool with that, but I am not cool with my guages not working. I went back to the muffler shop and talked to them about it. They seemed to not be telling me the whole story. It was shady. My guages still don't work and I still have the check engine light on. Does anyone offer any advice.??? thanks in advance.

Well the way to reset is disconnect black battery wire for 30min than attach and restart. It doesn't sounds like an ECU problem though. Sounds like they messed up the engine or something else. Try to reset the ECU, but that might not fix it

Wow, that is wierd, that your gauges dont' work now. I would check to see if , like everyone said, that the O2 sensors are inplace then disconnect the battery, and pull the fuse for the ECU. Leave it for like 2 minutes. Then reconnect it all.

That should work. I don't what they did to make your gauges not work though.

I did something the guy at the dealership told me to do. Disconnect the battery and touch the two together for about a minute. I hope I didn't fry anything. Left them undone for about 5 minutes and then I reconnect them. They guy also told me it might clear the code, but on the emissions test it will still come up something wrong. well it didn't work after I did all that. Looks like i might have to take it to the dealership to get it fixed.

First off all check the fuse for your speedometer, which should be the same fuse that keeps the altenator charged. They might have blown it some way or another.
Whenever I reset my ecu, I pull out the ecu fuse in the fuse box under the hood for about a minute. It should be a 15.
Good luck!

before trying to reset it why don't you check to see what code it's coming up with.... cause' if you reset it and it goes away then you don't know what was wrong to begin with...

What he said. And after you figure the code out disconnect the neg. off the battery and the 15 amp fuse for the ecu in under the hood fuse box. Wait 5 min. and put both back on/in. This will reset the ecu and clear all codes. If this doesnt reset the cel you have an outstanding electrical problem that needs to be fixed. Check code and repair as needed.
Fixes Hondas for a living<.......

look for a plug near your ecu, more than likely it will have a green cover on it since you never did this before. take the cover off and you can put a paperclip in there. read the codes by looking at the flashing CEL on your cluster. a LONG CEL means 10 and SHORT ones means 1. LONG LONG LONG SHORT SHORT would be 32 for example. HTH

where does this paper clip go? I see a green plug with two wires coming out of it and one female plug with no male in it. How can I hold it in there and have enough time to read the codes on the dash? I can't see the dash hold the paper clip in.

you put the paper clip into the plug to "jump" the two wires together..... then you turn the key to the on position without starting it and read the cel.....
