Its hard to get power from the single jingles without forced induction or a full rebuild. Depending on how well taken care of the car is you may just want to do a general tuneup. Adjust the valves, adjust ignition timing, clean-out the throttle body and intake mani could even do a small port and polish while your in there, check out the dizzy maybe throw a cap and rotor at it, make sure the autobox is running fresh juice, adjust your throttle cable, reset and do a relearn on the ecu after all that.

If the car hasn't been gone over in a while your sure to notice a difference. Even if you don't it all needs done sooner or later anyway and you know its done. If you want to go turbo in the future supporting mods for it would be a good move. Bigger radiator, catch can, Chipped ecu, stuff like that.

Can we get a picture of the bay? The throttle cable is a good one thats almost always gets missed. Doesnt really make it faster but deff more responsive.
As for being slow, its a D series they made for mpg. Could shed some weight that always helps but there really isnt much to delete on these cars without sacrificing comfort.

Some ideas without a turbo or full high comp build on the motor:

Get the head milled down to bump up compression ratio
Gut the trunk, remove spare and jack (dont suggest this one), remove A/C if you have it
Port and polish the head, throttle body, intake manifold
Swapping or converting to a manual rack could remove a pulley and shed some weight. Assuming you have PS.
could throw a high lift cam in it
Poly bushings for the front suspension or maybe a traction bar to make sure your putting down w/e power you are making
Tuneable ecu with a more aggressive professional tune

A 5-speed conversion is going to make your car feel faster, especially if you go with an EX or Si transmission (S20-B000 or S40-B000). A final drive swap to something shorter (like MFactory's 4.5) will make it accelerate faster, but will raise cruising RPM and lower top speed. Nitrous is somewhat inexpensive up front and makes it faster, but refilling the bottle gets old, and the more sophisticated your nitrous system becomes, the more expensive it becomes.

bro its a 110hp 4 cylinder. nothing you can do will make it feel less anemic. People spend 10 grand on these just to hit 200whp NA, and you're still as slow as a v6 camero
