HELP! Throttle cable sticking after new TB installed?
Hey all ... as some of you may know, I'm swapping an SOHC VTEC head onto my non vtec motor. Well, the head will be ready tomorrow, but I thought I would go ahead and put the ported intake manifold and new BBK 62mm throttle body on. This would let me work on any funkiness caused by this part of the swap.
What I was worried about was the IAC. The EX (SOHC VTEC) stuff that's going in had the IAC mounted on the intake manifold and uses 2 wires. My DX had the IAC mounted on the TB and uses 3 wires. I looked in the Helms and found that two of the wires from the DX IAC match the two on the EX IAC. I wired these together. The check engine light comes on, so that is one issue. Other than this, it seemed to run fine. Unfortunately, the BBK does have provisions for mouting an IAC, but apparently it's not intended for use with my DX IAC so I had to use the supplied block off plate. On this, I guess if I get an EX ECU, I can just wire up the EX IAC properly, and that will fix that problem, but what about the knock sensor? If it's not hooked up, will there be problems with the ECU? I'm using a Fields box to control the VTEC engagement, so that's taken care of, and that's also why I thought I could get away with using my DX ECU.
The real problem right now is that once I pull out of the driveway, the throttle seems to stick. Say, I rev it to 2500 and back out, it stays at 2500. If I tap the gas, it goes back down, near normal. What's up with that? I've tried lubricating the spring and such on the TB, no luck. I've adjusted the throttle cable all over creation, and no luck there either. I don't see that the cable is binding anywhere, but you never know. Any ideas guys?

Oh man, nobody has ideas yet? This car is driving me crazy. Everytime I stop I have to punch the throttle to get it back down to idle. Could it be the TPS? Not sure about that thing, but it really seems like the throttle is sticking...
Well, i have a couple ideas for you. It could be something simple. On my car for example, my clutch cable was rubbing on it, and it was keeping it from shutting smoothly. Also, how do you know its staying open? Try taking you intake tube off, and driving it like that. When it sticks, just pop the hood and jump out of the car. Your should be able to clearly see if its sticking or not. If it IS closed, you might have a problem with the IACV or something else. Try what i said first, and post what happened.
When I installed the stuff last night, here's what I did. Revved the motor by hand at the throttle body, fine, no problems. Got in the car, backed out, and it hung around 2500-3000 RPMs. Got out with it still revving, and when I tapped the throttle lever with my hand, it went back to idle. That's why I'm pretty sure it's sticking. I'm *hoping* the problem is with the throttle cable. Since my car is a DX, it has a longer cable than the EX. Since the manifolds are much different, the cable routing is all hosed up. I'm ordering a cable from an EX today, hopefully that will do the trick.
BTW - Anybody have any good info on the TPS? Since I had to cut the rivets and remove it from the old TB, then bolt it onto the new one, I'm not sure if it's set right or not. The instructions say something about measuring the voltage, but since I'm a bonehead I just looked at where it as, and tried to mount it the same way. Is there a way that I can tell whether or not it needs adjustment?

You can tell with a volt meter. Other than that, you can't visually set it (accurately). When you do get a voltmeter to test it, it should ba @ 4.5 volts at wot, then it will be set. Having the TPS set improperly could really affect performance. Have a friend hit the gas pedal with you looking at the TB, first with the motor off, then with it on if it doesn't get stuck with it off...
Ok, I got it worked out and wanted to give a heads up.
To anybody considering gettint the BBK aka Edelbrock 62mm throttle body ... do it! It's pretty damn sweet.
Next, for $300 you get a nice (unpolished version) 62mm throttle body and a gasket that is too big and actually hits the throttle rotor. I had to trim the excess off the gasket. I assume this was the problem with it sticking. I saw it when I was bolting on the new head today! I will find out for sure if that was the problem tomorrow after I get it running. I guess I'm gonna have it towed to a shop to have the stupid crank pulley bolt removed. I hit it with the impact all night and it didn't work. The guys at Autozone said hey ... throw a breaker on there and crank the motor real quick. I did, and it broke the socket. So much for that
Tomorrow I guess we'll see if this little D16Y7 block / D16Y8 half breed mutt works out ok. Still waiting for UPS to pay me back for the turbo they lost ...
