I had a spare transmission rebuilt for my project, and now that it is installed I am getting a "whine" when the car is moving. We all know the whine a Honda transmission makes when in reverse - well, the whine is louder and more pronounced in reverse now. It also has a whine when moving forward. If I push the clutch in while driving, it gets quieter. I have also noticed the noise is more pronounced in lower gears (1st, etc); and it get less pronounced but audible in 5th gear.

YS1 (short-geared GSR trans). MFactory LSD, Syncotech carbo syncros and rebuild kit (new bearings, etc in the kit), new diff bearings, and Torco MTF (+/-2.3L) in the transmission. New ACT light flywheel, Exedy Stg 1 clutch kit, and OEM flywheel bolts installed at the same time. Raxle axles (500 miles) installed before the transmission swap.

I have only put 100-150 miles on the build, and I am trying to determine if the whine is "just" bearings seating, etc. As the noise is audible when moving in a straight line, it should not be related to the diff. I did not install the transmission parts, but I had a Honda tech complete that portion. I did install the transmission/clutch into the car. If the transmission was shimmed too tight, would a whine be present? The noise reminds me of a timing belt that is too tight. It has been suggested to drive the car 1000 miles to see if the noise goes away, but I would prefer some other opinions.

Bearings have no break-in or wear-in. If its making a noise now that goes away then you have rapid wear occurring. It needs to come apart and be inspected.

 

press the clutch pedal down while at a stop at idle and rev it...see if it's actually the power steering pump whining
