Default 2000 civic random stalling and no restart

Step son has a recently purchased 2000 civic the car has 250km + it is an automatic, occasionally boggy on 1-2 shift and has a 100-200 rpm hesitation or pulse.Any how it stalled at a stop sign they got it restarted stopped at buddies wouldnt restart, went this morning 12 hrs later car turns over and sputter but wont start , fuel smell while trying to start . pushed i t outta way got mad and hit remote starter for giggles it fired ran and stopped then restarted put the key in it and drove it home then.restarted 5 times in the yard, what can the problem possibly be. He uses it to travel 250 kms away to school so hesitant to trust it any thoughts or directions appreciated . also no codes showing and checked vin number to see if any outstanding recalls it showed none

If it started by the remote start, but not the key, then it is most likely the contacts on your ignition switch. There is a thread here somewhere that details how to clean them. Worst case, replace.
