Default Is this a legitimate B16A3 engine serial number

Hello all,

Just received delivery of a 1995 del sol I bought from eBay. Car looks ok but engine has an oil leak which I intend to get addressed. Before that though, my research on serial numbers for B16A3 does not match the what this engine's serial number is. At first I thought it said S3XXXXX but upon closer look, I believe the 1st digit is a "6" so SN is 63XXXXX. Is that right? The seller claims the engine and tranny are original to the car. Is what he claims true?

Thanks in advance!

Concern is more about the serial number, specifically if the 1st two digits are legitimate for a 1995 del Sol VTEC...

Does it have two cams and a VTEC solenoid?

And most likely your oil leak is from the cam seal/plug on the right side exhaust cam behind the VTEC solenoid.

I may have found my answer. There's an engine on eBay for a 1995 del Sol VTEC with serial number that looks like mine... Whew...

Thanks all!!!

Great! A huge sigh of relief in the HT community. And now I'll be able to sleep tonight.

I would be more worried that the mileage on the cluster doesn't match the motor.

There is such a thing call a VIN #. If it matches the VIN on the dash, your legit.

Not sure that they started applying VIN tags to this specific block since the A3 ended with 1997 I believe.

Pretty sure that 96-97 Del Sol VTEC engine code was B16A2. Same as the 99-00 Civic Si.

Either way it's not like there's someone out there counterfeiting B16 engines. As long as it's not a SOHC and it has a VTEC solenoid, it's got to be authentic. Original to the car is a different story. A Del Sol VTEC will have EG2 in the VIN.

Correct.

And Honda wasn't using green VIN tags on engines and transmissions until at least '97, possibly '98 on Civics.

Got it, but I swear I could've seen somewhere that the a3 was the del sol vtec. Oh well.

1994-95 Del Sol VTEC = B16A3 (OBD I)

1996-97 Del Sol VTEC = B16A2 (OBD II)
