Do all Del Sol SI motors say "VTEC" on them?
My brother is going to test drive a 1997 Del Sol SI (manual). It's the SOHC VTEC, but the engine does NOT say "VTEC" on the valve cover.
Is this normal???

they valve cover only says VTEC on the 94 and 95 models. 96 and 97 just say honda on the VC. just look for the vtec solenoid on the back of the head

Re: Do all Del Sol SI motors say "VTEC" on them? (B18Redline)
Same way it does on every other VTEC engine.
I assume you're asking this as "on a del sol" because you don't know what it looks like, period. In which case you should of just asked "what does it look like." Here's a picture:
In case you can't tell of it's location that's the left side of the head when looking at the engine from the front.
Here's another picture:
You can understand it's location better here. It's the upright cylinder next to the distributor, under the plug wires (blue ones). Has the green plug going into it as well as another wire.
Again this is looking at the engine from the front (both pictures).
EDIT:
Here's another diagram for ya:
If you have trouble locating it from those pics feel free to throw me a PM.

If its the SOHC, pay no attention to the location in the post above. Its behind the valve cover, passenger side. Looks the same though. Also check the code on the block. to the left off the exhaust manifold, right next to where the tranny meets the block, there is a little square that should say D16Y8.

Hey dickless, two of those pictures are from a SOHC. The middle one's from an LS/VTEC-T, but the oher 2 are both SOHC's. I'm just trying to give him an idea of what it looks like...sorry I didn't specify the milimeter vector displacement from the shock tower, remind me to include that next time. In the meanwhile, that's a perfectly fine guide for somebody who hasn't seen a VTEC solenoid before. It's easier to see a VTEC solenoid than it is to look at an engine code, here I'll even help GENERALIZE it due to what you said.
At OP:
It looks EXACTLY the same as it does in all those pictures, if it's a SOHC then it's probably located on the opposite side of the distributor (like in the first picture, closesr to the firewall) oppose to a DOHC where it'd be on the flipside...both on the passenger side (left side when looking at engine), all look the same.

Re: Do all Del Sol SI motors say "VTEC" on them? (Syndacate)
all this is just confusing.
look at the block:
d16y8 = 96-97 sohc vtec Si model
d16z6 = 94-95 sohc vtec Si model
if you see d15b7, it's a 94-95 S
if you see d16y7 it's a 96-97 S

thats wrong too, if its a SOHC its on the rear of the ENGINE, intake side, top left corner of the motor behind the valve cover looking at the motor from in front of the car.

aI owned my del sol for 2 months now, and i am new to sohc motors, this whole time i thought it was non-vtec and now i found out it is , but does it have to be an SI if it is the Vtec motor.

unless it was a motor swapped del sol...
Si has SOHC Vtec
VTEC or SiR has DOHC Vtec

Not to be confused with "THE MAN"

Yes sir, that is correct.^^^^^ See wasn't that simple, instead of bitching at each other and confusing this guy that's asking for help.
