96-00 auto to manual swap QUESTION

Default 96-00 auto to manual swap QUESTION

Im doing a auto to manual swap n i have everything i need to do it already but my question is, do I absolutely 100% need the manual ecu, Intake manifold and TB to make it run??? Every write up that i seen even the famous one on here doesnt tell me that i NEED those nor the reasons as to WHY i need it. So do i really need it???

What engine do you have? In some cases you'll need to change all that stuff, in others no. It really hinges on what engine is in the car.

I have the d16y8 in my car n i dont wanna go thru the hassle in swapping the manifold and TB and ecu. Id rather keep it and just have the check engine light on since its on already anyway cuz of a high voltage o2 sensor.

I can at least touch on the ECU. You have an OBD2 ecu and I have never anything about converting an OBD2 ecu to manual like you can the OBD1 ecu's. Just as OBD2 ecu is not flash capable like an OBD1 ecu is, I suspect you can't simply remove a couple of resistors and solder in a jumper wire like you can on the obd1 ecu's to turn it into a manual ECU. I bet the OBD2 ecu would require a lot more to make it a manual ecu. i.e. a chip change.

OBD2 ecu's appear to be severely limited on their capabilities.

I can not speak to the throttle body or Intake Manifold. I suspect there are key ports on each that differ between automatic and manual. i.e. maybe the IACV resides in different spots between the two styles of the D16Y8 (auto/manual).

I know all that. I would have to get a new manual ecu, but why?? Thats my question. The TB and intake manifold will need replacing when u convert to manual ecu because of the IACV and itll idle poorly and run like ****. But i want to keep my auto ecu and tb and intake. I know i cant do manual ecu with auto TB and intake manifold. I wanna know if itll run normal with auto ecu, tb and intake manifold.

It should run normally, but you'll never pass emissions if you live in a state or province where it matters.

if you can deal with the CEL you can leave it alone. As ^ he said, you will never pass emission or inspections.

Alright cool thanks guys i just wanted to know for sure if itl just run okay. But im not worried about passing emissions since i just got mines n im good for a year so i got plenty of time to do it the CORRECT way wen i get more money.

I did an auto to manual swap in my '95 D16z6. The difference I found with the auto to manual TB was where you connect the throttle cable to the TB. That round mechanism that the cable is looped around (Can't think of it's name) is a different size on the auto TB, it's much larger than the manual one. You will also need a different throttle cable.

I dont think i need a new cable for the Y8. I never seen anyone mention that for this type of swap on this motor.

It's a pulley, and it's the same size, the only difference is the auto throttle body has an extra pulley for the transmission kickdown cable.

'96 - '00 Civics use the same throttle cable. '92 - '95s were different at the pedal end.

^^ correct. I was on a '95, so yes I needed a different throttle cable. Oh the little things....
