Lots of smoke in VTEC and burning oil (used half a gallon in 3000miles) I have an idea of the cause (abuse by previous owner/going in to VTEC when engine cold most likely) but what is the solution?

if its burning a gallon in 3000 miles there could be LOTS of problems..

Half a gallon is better than a gallon but that's still an awful lot of oil. Compression and Leak Down will start pointing you in the right direction. Any suggestions offered ahead of that are merely that... suggestions on what "could" be wrong. Nearly all of them entail opening up the engine so test things out and then come back with the results.

Blue tint means it's oil you are burning. My guess is it's your rings. My old type r went through about half a quart every 300 miles. And it's been like that for the last 40k. I never changed the oil just the filter lol.

Get your head rebuilt. New valve seal guides may need valves. Common issue with these motors after being driven hard continously and high miles. May possibly need new rings as well.

So...we're skipping the compression and leak down test then?

Unless there is fairly significant engine damage, compression and leak down will normally still read fine in situations like this. If it's an original engine just rebuild it.
