Just did my front brakes today (new Nissin pads, new Brembo rotors and a new left caliper)

Now the damn thing is making awful grinding noises....

Double checked my work on each wheel and made sure all bolts were tightened down. Shims are in. Pads are in correct position. Bled both front wheels.....what gives?!!

No it is NOT the squeal that you occasionally hear as the pads are settling whilst braking. It is more of a grinding sound and it is present until I hit the brakes.....which work WONDERFULLY now btw.

Any ideas folks before I have to take it to my local mechanic and pay him $$?

 

I have no brake know-how but ill give it a guess. Maybe the new brake setup is too close to your rims???

Bent backing plate?

I'd jack it up and turn wheels by hand and figure out where it's coming from.

Btw it's good mechanical practice to replace braking components as a pair- both calipers. Kind of like rebuilding an engine using only two new pistons and two from orig engine. Did you lubricate the caliper ears (sliders inside boots) before reinstalling? Those let pads release away from rotor when not in use. Only use disc brake grease.

 

Only reason I replaced the left caliper was that it had blown and was leaking fluid. Didn't have enough $ to replace them both.

And no I didn't lubricate the caliper ears (and quite frankly don't really know what you are talking about)

Also how the crap do I un-bend the backing plate? I.E. what shape is it supposed to be in?

 

Sliders inside rubber boots on caliper- if crusty and dry, pads don't release from rotor

 

spin each wheel individually and narrow it down from there.

 

the backing plates are fairly thin and get bent. The goal is not to bend them back to the exact original shape, just to get them clear of the rotor.

Take the wheel off and turn the rotor until you find the point it's rubbing, pull it back enough to clear the rubbing.

 

Was so sore when I got up this morning I couldn't get the lugs off.

Took it to mechanic who unbent the dust covers (aka backing plates) in all of 10 minutes.

That fixed it. Thanks guys. Hope I didn't do any permanent damage to my brand spanking new rotors.

 

Are those "backing plates" or "dust covers" the same as the caliper shields on the rear of a del sol?

I did my rear brakes:pads,calipers & rotors and have that same noise.

I think I'll take those caliper shields off and ride around to see if that's the noise.

I know the feeling of tired arms after being in there 4 or 5 times so far.

 

the backing plates are flat and round a little bigger than the rotor. They are directly behind the rotor. #37 is a backing plate #39 is a caliper shield.

 

Op- I'm aware the noise is not from sliders, but so you know next time I was talking about #40 and 24

 

Took the advice here and went and checked the backing plates on the rear of my del sol and that was not the source of my noise.
Just FYI I took off the mounting bolts of my caliper and just let the caliper truly float as I spun the wheel. The outer pad was draging a little and I twisted the caliper a little bit to take the pressure off that pad.
When I found that quiet spot I realized when I went to rebolt the caliper the emergency brake cable was putting a little twist on the caliber and prevented it from seating cleanly. I just put pressure on the cable to take the stress off the caliber and hand tightened each bolt all the way down and retorqued them. The sliders were lubed and working so now I think the caliper is seated cleanly. Just a slightly twisted caliber may have been the problem.
