Default b20 vtec questions

Hi Guys,

already read the famous thread about building LS/b20 vtec but i got a few questions whose answer was not there.

1- Is is preferable to use high comperssion pistons on b20b block?

2- Is it safe to run 11.5:1 compresion pistons on stock rods (b20b)?

3- Is there any other mods that should follow when using such pistons?

4- Finally, is it woth spending about $500 on High Comp pistons !! what is the estimated hp gain compared to using stock pistons on b20?

thanks

Any time you raise the compression you will see power gains. How much gain can really only be determined by the rest of the surrounding parts. As for the stock rods I've seen them handle 26+ lbs of boost and 400hp in a drag only race car that saw no real mileage. I have no idea how long they would last revving over 8k. A good thing to do if you plan on using a stock rod is purchase some ARP rod bolts for some extra insurance. Good luck

RS Machine pistons. They fit on stock rods, and they are around 11.5 depending on the head you use.

Stock B20 sleeves suck. You want a 2 liter bottom end? Sleeve any B series block(except a B16) and run 84+mm bores.

Lots of people will claim to be running stock sleeves, revving to 9,000 RPM all day long, running 20 PSI no problem, etc.
I have seen more cracked B20 sleeves than any other Honda engine by a wide margin. The sleeves are weak. Properly tuned, they may last indefinitely. Or not. If you are going to be sinking your hard earned dollars into something, would you rather be sure, or do you like to live on the edge?

RIP Earl Laskey. He was in the Honda engine sleeving business and knew just a bit about the subject.
