Default Peeps who have cracked sleeves on the B20 got a Q for ya

Did the cracks go from top to bottom or bottom to top? I was curious because I thought maybe a blockguuard might help if they crack from the top down. Thanks

Mine havent cracked, but if I had to guess, I would say top to bottom. The top is the portion that is not attached to anything solid ("free floating").

the only pic/stories i have heard have been top to bottom,

as well as the area around the siamese joins...

here is some stuff i found whilst searching for pics for you:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=304251

sounds like the consensus here was that sleeves and BG may be required to run 9lbs+ boost.

oh, and a little thing called 'tuning'

HTH,

Let me ask you this tink. IYHO, Would it be worth it to tear apart a perfectly good b20vtec and install a blockguard if I am spraying 100 shot on it? In other words, would a blockguard offer enough needed strength to warrent dismanlting my motor?

i know no NOS... LOL

have you heard of many Honda blocks getting broken by NOS? isnt it more the pistons and stuff that fatigues? i really dont know...

plus cant you get one of those staged NOS thingys?

(BTW - you need a full ANDRA licence to run NOS at our tracks, plus NOS is illegal for use on public roads...)

OK, MHO is this:

tuning make or breaks and engine. if you tune bad, things can break.

i hope someone else can answer your Question jeff, but you seem to have done alright so far!

PS NICE bike

Yes I plan on getting a Zdyne w/ 550cc injectors for tunning. I was just currious if anyone else had any expriences w/ a blockguard and crackin,

o yeah this is one a stock B20, no VTEC

Never got it running quite right without going to full race gas. Ran on mixture of ~6 gals 94/2 gals 110, like raped ape. Dynoed at 213 and 160ish on dynojet with very little tuning. We went the same route and decided to lower the comp. ratio. Mid-dome 85mm this time. Should be a around 12.5:1 this time on 94 octane.

Yes it would help the sleeves from cracking because the blockguard is on the upper portion of the sleeves correct? It would help the sideload on the sleeves w/ boost and higher RPMs would it not? If it didnt then why do people use them> any input would be great.

thanks

if the sleeves are gonna crack, they will just compress the block guard.
its not gonna stop anything from happening. it wont help with side load
because its not in the middle of the cylinder.

So the blockguard would just compress instead of the sleeves crackin? Are there any other beifits from a blockguard?

i think you should be safe if you run the engine safely...meaning you dont try to do some crazy *** shiot that just wont hold up. LIKE 20-25psi...or thinking your gonna be able to take a non-vtec bottom end up past 7500 without cracking a sleeve...if youre gonna go b20/vtec i suggest that you get the crank balanced and blueprinted...just becarefull with what you do and you shouldnt have any problems

Dont bother with a blockguard. They demish some cooling properties in the cylinder top end which may lead to problems in itself. For a 100 shot (please tell me its WET and you already understand the timing, spark plug, and fuel system issues) I would recommend some forged pistons, Arias would be my choice along with some Eagle or Crower rods with ARP studs and bolts in place. With that high of a shot, I would go with Arias custom 10.5:1 compression rate. Good luck. -HIT
