d16y8 oil pressure help
Hey guys ive done a lot of research and haven't found a good answer to my questions so I thought I would make a post asking.
I have a d16y8 turbo. My oil pressure at start up is great. Around 90-95 psi depending. If i drive it easy with not much boost it will hold oil pressure around 50psi at 3,000 rpms with easy driving and it will idle around 15-20 psi once warm.
Here is where my concern is. If i do just one single pull through a gear or two and then come back to idle the pressure goes down to 12.5-15 psi. I know the oil gets thinner as it gets hotter. Is this a dangerous low oil pressure?
My second concern is I do a lot of highway driving and after 20-30 minutes of it my oil pressure is no longer 50psi at 3,000 rpm's. It drops down to about 40ish.
I have tried switching to all different types of oil and nothing really helps alot. The thicker oil (5w40, 15w50 etc) does help bring up my oil pressure but I was worried that may do damage to my motor by being to thick?
So is it safe to run the thicker oils in my motor over the recommended weight?
Is the oil pressures listed above to low to even worry about?
Thanks to everyone that replies and views!

I too have a d16Y8 and oil has always been a concern of mine. I've seen a few articles where people habe stated that oiling is an isue with D16Y8 motors and some people have gone through and bored out the oil pump to allow for greater flow. This maybe an option for you. As for the oil pressure dropping and raising all over I would say to check the location that you are pulling the pressure signal from. Are you using a sandwich plate on the filter?
Just trying to get an idea so I can think of something. As for running the thicker weight oils, that really should not hurt you since people are devided on what they run with boosted setup's.

The Y8 doesnt flow enough oil when you get into the mild boosted set ups.. Porting/shimming the pump will fix this..
As far as the original question: The norm is 10lbs per 1000rpm
So your fine.. try and not drive the car hard till fully warmed up and oil pressure drops

I recently boosted my y8 and had similar concerns with the oil press, but you seem to be fine. When it was warmer out, i actually got down to 8 psi. However, its recently stayed at around 20 psi and sits around 40 or so cruising on the highway after its warm. Dont know where ur from, but i would be careful about using thicker oil, as im from ohio where its been getting chilly and the oil press is staying higher for longer. I run rotella t5 and my oil press takes about 2 min to drop under 80, then drops another 10 psi every stoplight until it gets down to around 20.

Okay I know the thread has not been used in a while but any how its about the same topic so I thought id bump it. Im in ohio and the temperature this morning was 50 degrees and boy did she love the cold air. Anyhow my oil pressure is not 50psi at 3k rmps and 18-20 psi at idle. Its much better once it gets cold out. I drove for an hour and a half this morning on the highway so it was plenty warm lol. My question is since my oil pressure geta much better with temperature would it be a good idea to have an oil cooler? Would that help?

A typical daily driven civic or drag civic doesn't need an oil cooler. There isn't enough load with stop and go traffic, sustained speed/rpm on the highway or on surface streets to cause excessively hot oil temps. Now if you're driving like a jackass all the time then you might need one. But until you can measure/datalog your cars current oil temp without a cooler you cannot say for sure if your car needs one
To me it sounds like you have much more serious issues and are trying to use an oil cooler as a bandaid. If the oil never got up to operating temp it would be too thick and cold which motors do not like. Cold oil cannot maintain a proper film barrier when it's cold at high rpms
Y8s are notorious for having oil pump failures/issues and the pressure bypass is known to stick. I suggest you pull the pan and see what the oil pickup screen looks like and that the pickup gasket is installed and in one piece. I would also take apart the bypass assembly ane thoroughly clean it
Or buy a new pump (I didn't see in this thead if you had or not)
Also what viscosity oil are you using and what filter? Improper oil weight can cause pressure issues and premature component wear

I have not installed a new oil pump yet. I think I might port it out some this next weekend ifbi get the time. I am currently running Valvoline synpower and a 5w40 weight oil...slightly thicker than the 5w30 weight recommended oil.
Even the original posted oil pressure is fine? Because once it is warm again next summer they pressure will drop again. 40psi at 3, 000 rpms. And wheres a good place to get a good 10w40 synthetic oil? I run the 5w40 which is this at start up/cold and thicker during hot temperatures.

if you want your worries to be at ease then to stop worrying about this issue is to build another bottom end. use a obd1 block because no matter how much you port the oil pump you have to port the crank shaft oils as well. just better to build a obd1 block and do the same thing if your worried about reliable. i been through this already, y series blocks are garbage. you will need another bottom end sometime soon. none of us here can guess when only you can prepare for it. sorry to sound negative but its the truth. good luck.
Wow, lets not get all crazy and tell him to get a new bottom. Yes, d16y8s are notorious for bad oil pumps, but i dont see anything suggesting his is bad. Mines been running fine and my oil was around 40-45 cruising on the highway. Im in NJ so i had to leave my civic back home, but i was back for labor day weekend and drove it around when i was home. On the drive from Cleveland to Columbus, it slightly worried me since it started around 50 psi and was down to about 40 psi by the time i got to Cbus. However, it ran fine and is thankfully no longer leaking oil (loose couplers to my catch can, doh) so i didnt see a problem. You also didnt really state what your idle psi was, just that it wasnt in the 15-20 range. What is it at idle when its fully warmed up?
