Default 00 h22a4 high performance build

im swapping my 95 prelude with a 00 h22a4 engine. i want to build it for boost. but not sure what to do for the most horsepower. so any advice from what bore size i should use to what internals i should use within the head. not sure what compression ratio i should use either... any help would be great!

I would start reading through build threads, mainly in the forced induction section of the forum. There are tons of big power H series builds, see what they have done and make the choices of what you want.

Otherwise consult with whoever will be building or tuning this for you, and see what they suggest.

Well you're working with an open deck on the h22a4, closed deck blocks are best for boost.
Basically if you're just trying to make a reliable boosted dd it just comes down to proper compression ratio depending on what you're going for, don't want any detonation.
I'd sleeve the block just to be safe, people are running mahle gold forged pistons without sleeving but you can find posts all over on the forums of people having issues with not sleeving the block so that's just up to you; and TUNE. Biggest thing is find an excellent tuner.
Best thing you can do is just put in the time to do a lot of reading. You can learn just about everything you need to know to make whatever type of build you'd want right here on Honda-tech. It just comes down to puttin in the time.

Okay thanks. I've been looking for a book on builds for h series engines but can't find any. I plan on running forged rods and pistons with stock crank shaft. I was looking into boring and sleeving it but not sure what the best size and compression ratio is for the most horsepower with my block. I am also definitely getting a block guard. I live hours away from good tuners. Closet people are in atlanta or Knoxville

Well for lack of a better term it'll run like dog s**t without a proper tune. Like I said.. I'd definitely sleeve your block if you're running forged internals. Shoot for at least a 9:1 compression ratio. I was planning on running 8.5:1.

Why such low compression?

From what I see, many people are still stuck in the mindset of low compression for boost to be safe on pump gas, and just make the power back with more boost.

Since tuning has come to the point it is at now, it is not unheard of to see 11 or 12:1 compression builds for boost, but most of those guys are running E85 or race gas of some type.

I guess it can come down to what the customer feels comfortable with.

Exactly. Again it all depends on what exactly you're shooting for. I just assumed from the way the questions were worded he's going to stick with pump gas.

Yeah im going to try and stick with pump gas because it will be a daily driver. I will have it tuned when I'm finished. I just can't find any advice on what size I should port my valves . I don't know what is the best upgrading my valvetrain.

What size turbo will you be using and what horsepower mark are you trying to hit?

Leave the head alone.

I am getting a t3 turbo from a friend. Alright, I was told to look in to a f23 head.

I'm assuming they meant an f23 block to do a stroker build. The f23 head flows significantly less than the h22 head, and is non-vtec (not as important for a turbo build though I suppose).

As mentioned, check for other boosted builds that are close to the hp range you want to build and see what has been successful. The only real problem with the stock block is you have to run FRM-compatible pistons and the ring-lands are known to not handle a lot.
