Default CV joint nuissance

I just rebuilt my tranny with new seals and bearings, got it all back together, bolted to the motor. The problem I'm having now is that the driver side CV shaft won't seat all the way up to the transmission. There is about a 1/8 gap still and I'm assuming it is because the little snap ring is not seating. I tried for 2-3 hours and even buying a new one from the parts store but to no avail. Any insight on this? The passenger half shaft went in just fine after some beating of course.

Yeah, we tried that but that axle didn't want to budge.
I think I will try to remove the snap ring off of the old axle and see if it goes in like that. If so, then I'll just have to keep playing with the new one until it snaps in. Ugh, these cars...
