Default 12 psi or 8psi, supposed to be built..

Hey guys i recently purchased a 96 civic ex. It has the d16y8 that was supposed to be built by slow motion motors sports. I talked to them they have no records of the guys name. Now he said it had eagle rods and je pistons but no proof. Here is what i know it has for sure

rca injectors
arp headstuds
strong 6 puck clutch
tial wastgate
hks blow off valve
greddy exhaust
chipped ecu
huge front mount

It has been and currently is running on 12psi daily. It doesnt spool till like 3k. It has a pretty large garret turbo. Now i do have a spring to drop it to 8psi if i so choose to. What do you guys thing? Risk it? or will it be fine with stock internals and 12 psi?

Thanks for the help and opinions in advance!

12psi is safe to run on stock internals, actually **** I can say for the d16, but its common for b18s, I'm going to run 10lbs on a stock long stock with a 60 trim turbo on my b18

I wouldnt worry at 12lbs, especially since it has arp head studs, if you want piece of mind have a tuner tune it to your specifications, personally I'm going to have my tuner give me low timing so I don't do any damage.

PSI isn't what makes or breaks an engine, it's power. D series motors are usually good for 200whp on stock internals, whereas B series can do 300whp. There are plenty of examples of people running more power than that, but those numbers are a good baseline to avoid engine problems.

OP, what are the specs on your turbo?

that was a retarded move on your end.... lol

here's what i would tell my kid brother to do.
take drail oil, remove dp & oil pan, look at rods to see if they are aftermarket or not...
with a flash light you MIGHT be able to ID the pistons if there is a casting on the underside.

Good luck

blinded by ambitions of owning a turbo with a built motor with no apparent knowledge of anything except what the seller wanted him to know

haha

honestly common sense when you buy stuff to properly check it out.

If you don't know how to properly check out a turbo car, i hope you have a trusted car buddy that know what to look for. If you don't, you won't be be able to tell the difference between a $1500 turbo kit or a $5000 turbo kit... let alone check for all the issues that turbo charge owners always worry about (like me ahaha )

Everyone's gotta start somewhere, and we all make mistakes....just try not to make mistakes that cost a few grand... lol

Yeah im trying not to. Everything on the car that is visable is name brand. I dont know the size of the turbo. Its a garret and pretty big. thats all i know. Also looking at my air to fuel ratio it says around 15.6-16 at idle. amd around 12-13 at boost. then blows off and drops to 10. sound like i need a tune? Isnt idle around 14.7ish from my research and boost should be 11.5-12 to be safe? Is there anything i can do to help besides a tune?
Also the valve tick pretty loud..so i believe its valve tick. I did adjust them properly which helped some but theres still a pretty destinct noise. Could it be my injectors arent firing properly? and causing valve noise?

thanks again guys.

Can you take some pictures of the turbo, and some measurements if possible?

The tick could be many things...including very bad things caused by boosting too lean.

+1 on the oil pan. It's really not that much work for what it's worth knowing

Okay guys im going to work on getting that turbo size and a picture of it here in the next few mins. In the mean time here is a video of the noise the motor is making.
Again i have adjusted the valves. And also listened under the car and it is not coming from the block. It sounds like the head for sure. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks again guys!

you are correct on what your afr's "should" be. i would definitely get the car tuned by a reputable tuner no matter what you do. It won't hurt any that's for sure.

as far as the ticking, not calling you stupid by any means but make sure you don't have any small exhaust leaks anywhere. i only mention because my buddy thought the same about his prelude before i noticed he was missing an exhaust mani nut...

It was missing an exhaust manifold nut!!! I started it up and sounds alot better also with the proper air to fuel ratio! Time for a test drive! be back in a few!

Mine ticks when it's cold cause I banged the limiter hard one night spinning. Valve adjustment in order I think and another oil
Change back to Dino oil I'm thinking. The synthetic runs a bit noisier imo.

Single cams don't usually tick so much it could be more serious. Check the valves check compression check everything on this car and get it tuned
