Ok so long story short.. I just bought this car and its supercharged.. I have a few concerns.. one being that it blows alot of black smoke in high rpms.. I'm hoping its something small but idk.. second. It has a breather on the valve cover and oil comes out of it when i get on it so do i need a catch can? What are the best spark plugs to use for thus set up? Should I get a boost controler and gauge? Please help lol.. thanks..

 

Black exhaust means ur running rich.. is it tuned?? and oil coming out means u got some blow by..

 

sounds like your not tuned properly, and do a compression test to verify that the engine is not shot, which it sounds like it is.

 

what kind of supercharger? dont think boost controlers work with any style s.c kits.

did you gap them, people usually use a cold step ngk plug, i have mine at 3.5 gap, thats what i used when i had a jrsc, make sure your pcv box is still there and conect the hose from the vc to the breather box like it should, there also should be a hose from right under the blower that goes to your pcv box, are you using the fmu unit or is it tuned on a engine managment? the black smoke is probally rich fuel! which leads me to believe its untuned! in that case you need to connect the pcv black breather box on right and have the motor tuned on a dyno asap, you can use a set of rc 440 cc injectors and have the motor tuned on at least a hondata s100.

 

I bought the ngk iridiums and didn't gap them because I was told they were pre gaped.. I think I'm going to go to import auto pros this sat. And just have them check it out. Were can I get the cold step plugs. And thanks for the info!!!

 

NGk plugs come pregapped for stock applications, you should still check/gap plugs everytime you put them in.

You need to get the car tuned, as its running rich. And you have some blowby which means rings and/or cylinder walls have probably suffered a little damage. If it were ME, I'd pull off the SC kit, sell it and freshen up the engine. Then turbocharge it as you'll get much more power that way!!

 

I was actually thinking of doing just that, but I was on my way to work and noticed the motor started ticking pretty loud. I'm scared its a rod.. how can I tell? I also switched back to copper plugs today and gaped them and it was running just fine then out of no where felt like it was miss firing..

 

Also.. I just changed my oil yesterday as the old oil was pretty bad.. I went with a 5 30 castrol high mileage.. should I have gone a heavier weight. It has 134xxx miles.. and could that possibly be the reason for the ticking noise?

 

Could be as simple as the valves just needing adjusting.

Also on the gap alot people go with a 0.030 to 0.035" on the gap for forced induction 4 cylinder.

Most gauges sold at stores will be in inches, also get the "feeler" gauge style not the circle one cause it can be more problematic due to the ramp.

Also you can buy a leak down tester from Harbor Freight for ~$40. I would recommened replacing the quick disconnects that are on the kit with a more name brand part cause the included ones are leaking and skew the results, which will add about $10 to the price, but after that its a solid tool and about half what automotive stores charge.

They also carry compression testers. Both are very handy tools for trying to figure out the condition of your engine and pretty easy to do once you get familiar with your engine. One on one time with your engine is always a recommened activity.
