how to tell where oil is leaking into cylinder and burning?
is there a way to figure out if oil is getting past the rings OR the valve stem seals/ valve guides?
without taking it apart?
my b18b1 (OBD2) is burning oil, it has decent compression
1 - 170
2 - 160
3 - 160
4 - 160
so im guessing its not the oil rings right?
i replaced the valve stem seals when i rebuilt it
so that only leaves the valve guides....?
is there a way to figure out for sure where its coming from?

i personally have never seen stock valve guide problems, most the time its rings since youve already changed the valve stem seals.
i got 185 across my ls, i think yours is alittle low

i forgot to mention that i replaced the rings as well
and with a leak down wouldn't it only tell me if the rings were bad?
because if the problem really is with valve stems/guides it wouldn't show in the leakdown test right?
and also my B18b1 has 165k miles on it, with 10k of them being after the rebuild

You could have a ring that has lined up, or many other possibilities. Compression test does not tell you anything about oil control..
Doing a leak down test and monitoring the % lost will tell you a lot and you can listen very carefully to see where the air is escaping which will tell you alot about whats going on in your engine.
If you hear hissing in the crankcase its the rings, hear it in the intake ports its a valve and/or guide, hear it in the exhaust port its an ex valve and/or guide.
When does it burn the oil, startup? hard pull? high revs?

holy crap, i guess on the bright side, you never need to do a oil change
thats alot of burning, u sure your not leaking it?
was the motor boosted or anything?

And ya, its been 6k miles and the oil still is a bit see through
But its real confusing
You'd think with that much oil disappearing and not being leaked out, i'd have clouds following me where i go, but i dont, theres just a strong smell where ever i drive, and a small bit of oil smoke that disperses quickly
I have no idea if it was boosted, when i bought it it seemed to just be upgraded with bolt ons, DC headers, underdrive pulleys, etc
sounds to me like the hone job was not done correctly...the cylinders are so out of round that it's not sealing......or the rings were installed incorrectly.
you can rule out valve stem seals because for it to consume that much oil the seals would have to be missing.
with that much oil consumption i can guarantee it's a piston ring issue....
pull out the spark plugs and let us know how much white ash/carbon is built up on them....
