Default tips on buying a used engine?

i'm looking to do an LS vtec in my teg, but i dont really know how to buy a used engine without actually hearing it run
are there some tips you could give me?
i need a complete LS bottom end
and preferably a b16a2 head
is there anyway for me to inspect it to have a good chance of buying an engine that won't give me too many problems?

In your case. The best tool is to bring a mechanic that knows Honda.

i do have a compressor, and i think i'll do a leakdown test
but just curious, how do you do a comp test with an engine out of the car?
do you just hook a battery up to the starter?

yes sir. ok then yea, a leak down would be a better choice then, honda specs are around 10% leakage.

also check motor mount threads that go into the block and make sure there not stripped

try to take valve cover off and get a peek inside, see if it was taken care of with no sludge

also make sure its dry as a bone on the front left corner of the engine where the headgasket is, VERY common place to leak

and then the overall look and story behind the motor.

Buying a used engine mostly people have to trust on word of mouth of seller, some sellers clean and clear all outer spots that shows engine life past and remaining. some used car parts seller have system to show (used engines they sell) in start position with detachable battery self and radiator, If so concentrate on engine noise
