Default Just got Type R valvetrain

Finally got my valvetrain from this Ebay auction. 97 JDM Type R

I'm going to put the springs and retainers in my GSR when I get the cams, but I got a couple questions.

1) Are both the exhaust and intake springs the same? Hard to tell but I think they might be different, how can I tell?
2) Inner springs go on intake side correct?
3) Is there an up and down on these springs and how do you tell?
4) The smaller valves are the exhaust?
5) What should I use to clean everything before install?

Thanks, and I'll post pics of the install and how the results afterwards.

1. If you look at the spring you can see thats its marking with either blue or yellow paint... that tells you which is intake and which is exhuast.. intake is yellow..

2. Correct

3. Not sure.. i think painted side is up

4. Correct

5. Soak them in some engine degreaser??

Good luck

Ok, looking at the springs again, it looks like there is some faint blue paint on some, but there is also sort of a lavender color on others. I don't see any yellow clearly painted on them. BUT when I divided them up based on that, it came out to 8 each. AND it looks like the lavender ones are a LIIIITLE bit taller than the others and seem a bit heavier/thicker. Which ones are which?

Are you sure that's not a GS-R valvetrain? The Type R has two sets of dual springs, where's the other set of inners? The GS-R has one set of dual springs for the intake side.

EDIT: GS-R intake springs = Type R exhaust springs. That would explain why you have blue and no yellow. I'm guessing you have a GS-R valvetrain there.

You'll have to buy another set of inners for the exhaust side.

Painted side faces up. Side with the tighter coiling faces down.

Brake parts cleaner. Walmart.

You'll also have to get the valve seats recut, as well as having the backcut on the valves redone to match.

Wow that's really bad. Yeah I'm pretty sure you got a GS-R valvetrain. You still need a set of both Type R inner and outer intake springs. That's a definite candidate for fraud, especially with the pic and all.

I don't think it's GS-R stuff. GS-R valvesprings don't come painted at all.

ITR exhaust springs are the same as GSR intake springs. If you buy ITR springs exhaust springs new, they come in "P72" marked packages and are painted blue. The P73 springs are only on the intake side, and painted yellow. Paint side up during installation. Best of luck.

The ones I pulled from my GS-R motor weren't painted.

But, the part number correspondences make sense.

All valve springs are painted. Thats how they identify them.
Yellow
Green
Blue
Orange

Whether or not the paint has stayed on over the years is another story.
