Default Has anyone done a d15z1 swap into a 96-00 Civic before?

A d15z1 from a 92+ VX hatch into a 96-00 Chassis?

Why?

Well because I want to do this solely for Fuel economy. Its impossible to find a virgin VX hatch and all 92+ shells that I see are beat up. It seems to be easier to find a 96+ body in excellent condition.

The VX mpg is rated at 45/55. Im sure in a heavier chassis it would be a bit lower, if you have done this swap how much mileage are you getting? Im guessing still a bit more than a stock HX.

Convert your Civic 96 OBD2 to OBD1.

You might be the only one that would DOWNGRADE like that. Seriously...WHY? If you are that concerned about gas mileage, get a Prius or Geo Metro.

Have you look into the HX model? How about areo modification and changing driving habit?

Well thats a given. Let me rephrase the questions. if anyone who has done this swap, can you tell me if the real world gains are worth it? is there an actual improvement in fuel economy? I would hope for 42/52 putting this motor into a +250lbs chassis

Its more of a head ache and money taking process than a gas saver. Get a DX.

A prius is more than 20k more than the setup would cost, for less than 6mpg difference in the city and actually LESS highway mpg (I drive mostly Highway)civic vx is 45/55 Prius is 51/48 but cost 24k.. the whole point of doing this is to save $ spending 23K up front is not an option.

But how do you figure its a downgrade, when my goals are for fuel economy?

I can understand where you're coming from.

If I were you, I'd look into the 3-stage VTEC D15B:

Excellent mileage and still plenty of power for when you need it.

It's a *great* engine for a great price.

Good luck,

unless your selling your old motor

buying a new motor to save on gas doesnt make much sense

" its like complaining about gas prices, And then spending $30,000 on a new prius"

Did you read the first post at all? there are no VX's Anywhere within 500 miles that isnt swapped with a b series. thats the problem, i would LOVE to buy a VX that is stock. I dont think they even exist anymore. and as stated already, all 92+ hatches are all beat up, this is why I want to locate the vtec-e motor and put it in a more current(96+) chassis

Not carefully enough I guess. I still think an HX is your best option though.

Thanks for the input Ron, but there are no HX's anywhere close to me. I am sitting on $6500. and would buy one right now if there was one located in a 100 mile radius, these cars are not common. this is why I wanted to get the d15z7 and a 96+ chassis and make my own VX or HX so to speak. Im sure the simpler solution would be to buy whats available, like a DX or EX which I could do, but considering the VX motor gets 55+mpg vs 30 something for the DX and EX its kind of hard to not consider doing this. as oppsed to sitting and waiting for a HX to show up ( which also gets less mpg)

There's a guy in Southern California (Club Civic forum) selling a D16Y5 HX engine/manual transmission/ECU for $300, if you remove them from the Civic HX. If you could find a deal like that and swap it into a 96-00 EX/DX coupe, then you'd get darn good mileage and an easier swap. Just my 2 cents.
