For every layer you remove, you bump compression by approx .2. You can use either the top or bottom portion. I'm running the same thing now.

So removing the top and middle layer I would be raising it .4

No problems with it leaking or anything? Are you using head studs or OEM hardware?

No problems. I did use some copper spray on both sides as a little added insurance though. I use factory headbolts which are all that is needed for 99% of the builds you'll see on here.

I have some doubt, about using only 1 layer gasket longevity

I dunno, in my opinion, hackjob head gaskets aren't worth it. You're taking a risk for what, 1 hp? Maybe 2 for a low-compression engine that already makes a lot of power?

If it's done properly, I wouldn't call it a hack job and the risk would be little more than a HG failure. I went with a single layer to help get my compression ratio to the range I needed for the cams I was running. I didn't want to go into the block to change pistons and the headwork I had done, only got me down to 42cc chambers so I had to go with a single layer gasket and I was still a little lower than I wanted.
