Hey guys,

I noticed that I'm pegging my Oil Pressure gauge at 100psi (the maximum reading) when in the mid-upper rev's. I have a mildly built H22 with the balance shafts removed and plugged via the Kaizeenspeed Balance Shaft delete kit, which supposedly will cause an increase in oil pressure. The reason I bring this up, is that the motor has some oil burning issues and some of the seals are slightly leaking oil too, which makes me think the seals are experiencing excessive pressure. I've already had a compression and leakdown test performed and the numbers were pretty solid. So if this oil pressure is indeed a little on the high side, I'm wondering if it is why I am burning so much oil...

As far as Im concerned you can't have "too much" oil pressure. Most honda oil pumps on high performance builds are the weak point as far as oiling is concerned, They struggle to provide the pressure/volume needed above 8500. Thats why MANY full race motor have ported oil pumps. I have a all OEM build 82mm GSR that I see anywhere from 100-109psi in vtec. I did remove the piston cooiling oil jets and plugged them with GE plugs purposely just to give myself better oil pressure in the higher RPMs. I have digital gauges so it is a precise number I'm giving there, not a guesstimate.

Trust me the first time I looked at it and it said 09 for 109, I just about ****. Let off and it dropped to 99 and I started to breath again.

 

Thanks for the reply. Do you or did you have any oil burning problems with that kind of oil pressure? I'm running a stock PCV system, so I'm wondering if that might be a cause for my oil burning issues? However, my car is driven very easy most of the time, so I wouldn't think excessive crankcase pressure would be an issue except for at high RPM, if anything.

I have no oil burning issues at all, but I do have a slight oil leak on the headgasket, right below the vtec solenoid which is very common on B-series. Im going to reseal it this summer when I build the head. As the motor has broken in, over 5k now, the oil pressure has dropped a little bit just from tolerences becoming slightly "looser" from being run.

your oil burning issue isn't from too high of oil pressure. its not a turbo car. I ran a b/s kit in my h2b and it didn't burn a drop. how does it smoke at idle, wot, decel ? this will give you a better insight on whats going on inside your motor. more then likely its your rings.

 

Well, the trouble is I am running a cat, so it masks it to some extent. I've haven't noticed any smoking at idle. I sometimes get some black out of the exhaust at WOT, but I haven't been able to tell if that is just due to a rich fuel mixture or if it's oil being burned. I tried to monitor the exhaust under high rpm deceleration and I possibly might have seen a little bit of "stuff" out of the exhaust, but I couldn't tell. If it was, it was minimal. But again, I'm running a cat. I may need to install a test pipe to monitor it better. I'm going to start carefully monitoring how quick I burn a quart of oil as well as my next step. Unless you or others have some suggestions.

 

When deleteing balance shafts your pluging oil holes which does increase pressure.. 100psi is good...you can never really have "too" much oil psi..

Running a cat, on a motor that requires alot of breathing so to speak, is bad.. i'd smoke alot too, but i was running a cat.. i removed the cat and no a lick of smoke.. your basically clogging the air way...and shoving exhaust gases back into the chamber.

 

Well, the cat is a very small and high flow cat. It's a 3" spun body metallic core Vibrant high-flow cat. This one here:

I would be surprised if it was much of a restriction for my particular setup.

Had that problem myself on my built b20vtec.. just didn't have time / money to get the exhaust work done, but its all fixed now just a thought, get rid of the cat, see if it smokes still.

 

Yeah, I think I'll probably just do that. Maybe I'll give it one more try with the cat on to see if I can narrow it down first, but if it gives lack of results, or confusing ones, then put a test pipe on and try again.

 

I'm having the same problem due to a cat on my b20vtec. I'm sure it'll go away as soon as I finish up my breather kit and get rid of the stupid cat. The stock PCV can't keep up.
