1996 Integra GSR MT tranny not going into gear
The car is a 1996 Integra GSR with JDM B18C and manual trans that belongs to a friend. Up till today, the car was driving just fine. The chassis has 74,xxx miles, but the mileage on the JDM drivetrain is unknown.
But now he tells me that while the engine is running, he cannot get the shifter into ANY gear or reverse. It feels like something is blocking or preventing the shift linkage from normal operation. He can only move the shifter left and right in the neutral position. When he tries to shove it hard into 1st gear, the shifter still does not move forward, but car very lightly surges forward.
When the engine is off, the shifter moves into all gears and reverse just fine.
I know nothing about transmission internals, but have plenty of experience replacing trannies and clutches.
Could a bad clutch be the cause? Or is this an internal problem with the tranny?

May be a totally different problem but i had an issue with my 1990 integra where my gear box started acting a bit funny and wouldnt shift into gear at times but i let it go as just a minor thing until i was stuck at the traffic lights and wasnt able to shift into any gear other than neutral.
I forced the shifter into 2nd and limped home and when i drained the fluid it was metallic rather than dark brown as you would expect, so i thought the worst, but when i pulled the gearbox apart, i found that one of the fins on the casing under the diff had broken off and taken chunks of other fins out and then managed to jam the gears.
Cleaned all the aluminium out of the parts, put it back together and its been running strong for a couple of years now.
It could be something like that, although it doesnt explain why you can move into gear when the engine is off.
Can you hear any crunching or grinding when you attempt to put it into gear when the engine is running?
It could also be the clutch
Im not a mechanic but these are just some thoughts

Was the clutch replaced when the swap was performed? Sounds like broken fingers on the clutch pressure plate.
Pull the transmission out and check. While the trans it out, take it to a local shop and have it popped open to ensure the internals are in good shape.

^x2 if u can put it into gear when its off but not when its running then either a spring came out of you clutch disc or the finger on the pressure plate broke.
Id have to say broken clutch or one of the driveshafts isn t in all the way? i had the same problem w/ my 98 gsr after replacing the passanger driveshaft. It was werid cuz watever gear id try to put it in the speedo would increase in every gear, by 5th gear it was reading 20mph at dead stop
I have to agree, it is a clutch problem.
If you can put it into gear with engine off and then start the engine and car moves, it is not the transmission, it is the clutch, I also agree it is probably a spring or finger.
Try putting it into all the gears, [engine not running] then start the car and see what happens, if all gears including reverse work, pull the transmission and replace the clutch. 94

Bring old thread back to life but same thing happening to me. Car was running fine when I got it. But fifth gear sychro was messed up so I got that replaced, along with new clutch kit. Brought it to mechanics they fixed the fifth gear issue and new clutch but left me with hard shifting from 1st-3rd. I'd have to force it in. Also reverse is a ****ing drag to get in gear. leading me to believe mechanics who put clutch in ****ed up. Was wondering if this got fixed for OP

I doubt there's something internally wrong with the trans.
Seriously? Why is it a throw out bearing? Do you guys know what the throw out bearing does?
yes when engine is off it shifts fine, sometimes its a little hard to get into reverse. i have the hardest time with first, second and reverse. when i put it in reverse when car is on when i get it in gear and go it sorta jumps back like its catching on the the gears?
[QUOTE=B serious;44724844]Probably an issue with the hydraulic system. Check the adjustment of the clutch. Check that there are no fluid leaks in the master or slave cylinder or lines. Check for fluid under the dash where the clutch pedal attatches to the firewall.

i will do as you say, afterwards i will take to a TRANNY AND CLUTCH specialist because i feel the mechanic i went too jipped me hard. and didnt properly put my clutch on... ill let you guys know what happens!!!!

Thanks for the questions about the initial results.
I pulled the tranny and clutch on his Integra GSR and found that the clutch definitely needed replacing. There was a small metal fragment originating from the pressure plate that broke off somehow and got jammed behind the pressure plate face preventing the clutch from fully disengaging. It was an OEM clutch.
I replaced the clutch and all has been A-OK. Nothing wrong with the tranny itself.

I had a full LS swap the day i went to swap my axle they all clicked in… although when i went to drive it, it wasnt going into any gear at all , would only stay in nuetral and not going into any other while the car was on.. somehow someway i inspected everything then seen a lil gap between the axle and tranny ,wasnt in alll the way. Was causing my car not to run at all. It was weird tho cause i couldve sworn the axle all went in until i dropped the car. Prolly came out or something
