Default Garrett PHX42 turbocharger results

Hello, I am new and searched for results on this turbocharger but have found little to no information on other forums. I see here that Peak Boost had tested on their evo w/ relatively low boost (around 30psi) with dismal results but since the thread is from back in 05-06... i cannot view the dyno graph to see how bad it lagged. Anyone w/ any concrete data on this turbo w/ a 2.0l 4 cyl? This is basically a gt4294r in what seems to be an s-cover. My particular one we have at the shop has a q-trim i think in T4 .81 exh housing.

looks like you are going to have to test it out and let us know how it goes!

PS when do I get to see the beast run!

This turbocharger was an interesting combination but just wasn't usable. This is before the Borg-Warner and Precision units that are more readily available with big power in smaller packages due to better aerodynamic designs.

could you define "unuseable"? What was typical spool (in lets say a 9:1 CR 2.0l motor or similar)? Surging / flow issues? What exactly was found to be negative? We're going to try it out since its on the Evo... but just wanted to see what info was out there before we start tuning it next week.

we were told it would spool quicker than a 4294r than in its original housing... but lose a tad of top end. This is in a T4 .81ar... So i was pegging it to act like a 67mm in a T3 .82? Just guessing as I am not the most knowledgeable w/ turbos. Im guessing from your response that perhaps the smaller housing may upset how it works?

Stay far away unless you want an expensive paperweight.

It wasn't usable because it would break with in a few passes. Large compressor wheel, small turbine wheel, small shaft....say goodbye to the thrust bearing.

hmm, that i could understand. But the example we have is a large shaft and the turbine seems to be the appropriate wheel for a 4294r. I mean the entire chra looks to be from the 42r just the housings are smaller? Here's a pic of what fell into our laps...

Never heard of anyone using it, i think a lot of people got over the big wheel in a small chassis thing real quick.

yeah, we've been using Forced Performance billet turbos over here... just this thing landed at our feet and it seemed interesting to try out. I also, cannot find any useable results from anyone. Well, i will be testing it next week... so I'll post results on a new thread bad or good, lol.
