Default Coolant System Problem

Hey Guys,

I've got a problem with my r6. Once the bike reaches operating temp, the temp continues to rise and the coolant is pushed back into the overflow tank and spurts out the overflow hose. At idle the bike will climb to excessively high temps, the fan will kick on and temp will drop slightly but still out of the normal range. Is this a problem with my water pump?

There are no leaks in the system anywhere.

The fan kicks on at 104C as it should I believe.

Please help.

its pretty common for motorcycles to run really hot at idle and when the fan kicks on the temp only come down a few degrees. normal temps for idle is between 200 and 220F. what year is your r6? because the 03/04s had issues with leaking water pumps

It's an '05. The temp is not climbing past 104c which is is 220F. I'm more concerned with the coolant leaking pretty drastically out of the overflow hose. It's spurting out with quite a bit of pressure.

The cooling system is not overfilled either. For example, the coolant in the overflow tank will be low and i'll let the engine heat up and the coolant will slowly build up the overflow tank and spurt out the hose at the top.

We drained the system and filled and bled again, problem still persists.

you need to check to see if your thermostat is faulty, also check to see if there is a loose hose. another good idea in your case might be to drain all the fluid and refill with fresh fluid just to make sure there isnt a air pocket. im leaning towards the thermostat, especially if you've recently changed locations where the weather is different

It could also be a head gasket.

if the fan is turning on at 220 than its not the thermostat. id check the water pump, make sure its working properly and fill with new fluid.

He is. It's pumping right out the overflow.

last i checked the purpose of the thermostat was to block coolant until the motor gets to operating temps...so in-turn if its stuck closed the coolant has to go somewhere (ie. the ground), the fan has nothing to do with the thermostat but it does have its own little sensor on the radiator letting it know when to start annoying you with a blast of hot air on your legs....but i've only been working on and riding motorcycles for 12 years(im 25) so what do i know

its either a faulty thermostat or a faulty water pump, replace them both and your problem is solved.

-is the bike upright and level while bringing motor up to temp? NOT resting on side-stand...

-proper procedure would also dictate that after filling radiator with fluid, that the motor be brought up to temp with rad-cap OFF. (water would spew out filler neck and NOT the overflow if there were to be further issues such as bad thermostat/water pump.) start bike and bring up temp till fans come on/thermo opens. fill radiator and cap it, start bike again ON SIDE STAND this time and purge system of remaining air using nut on right side of radiator (the highest point of cooling system). fill overflow till intbetween MIN/MAX line. done.

Sounds like air in your system

Good luck with your problem
