what motor swap in a eg would be ez to state ref now days?

Any motor that's not JDM and has all the correct smog equipment hooked up and working correctly, disregarding K series swaps just because I'm pretty sure there are some issues within the wiring harness and/or ECU.

Oh, and B20s aren't a swappable motor either just because CA considers the CRV a small truck, and it's not legal to swap in a truck's motor into a car (Civic).

+1 JDM/UDSM direct replacements are what the law says. In January it was legal to do non-direct JDM replacements (ie B18C or K20 in a Civic etc..) The laws change a lot. Call your ref station and tell them what you have in mind to see if they will BAR it for you.
