i just got my 2001 R repaired just a few days ago due to a faulty "immobilzer unit". the whole thing was replaced. i'm asking here because i've never heard of it before, especially on an R, and maybe my experience will help someone else out one day if they remember this thread.

anyway, my ride had a problem cranking for some time now. the key icon would keep flashing indicating a problem, not allowing the engine to start even though i was using my factory keys. this was only on occassion, but it got to the point last weekend that i had to insert and remove the key about 9, 10 times before it was read and allowed the engine to start.... annoyed the sh*t out of me. i didn't wanna be in a situation where i needed to bail pronto and be stuck

the dealer replaced the unit and all is good now. just curious if mine was solo on this...and the teg doesn't fall under the recall for the ignition switch i don't think...hmmm

 

you are not the only person, I had this problem and the dealer had no clue what I was talking about or ever heard of this.
Could you tell me whats the dealers name so I could have my dealer call yours to fix my car-please?

 

it took my dealership a 2nd try to diagnose the problem....but the mechanics there are top notch...IM me
