Default Huh? Does a faulty vss sensor/speedometer reading affect vtec not engaging?

I recently bought a 93 del Sol Si. Sweet little car and I've been fixing it up pretty nicely. Anyways the speedometer is not working, but everything else such as the RPM gauge is reading correctly and I have no CEL's. I've been thinking most likely the VSS sensor is shot and I need a new one since my crap wont read past 20 MPH.

Anyways I came across an old thread and someone stated that if the VSS sensor isn't reading correctly then VTEC will not engage. How is that so? I thought VTEC depended upon the RPM's in order to function. If my cluster is reading RPM's correctly than shouldn't VTEC engage correctly?

The Vtec system needs the VSS signal to engage. This is to keep Vtec from enaging when revving in neutral.

Vtec needs:
Oil pressure
Engine speed signal (RPM)
Vehicle speed signal (MPH)
TPS signal
MAP sensor signal
Coolant temp signal

Oh crap well thanks for the answers guys.

I hardly ever rev past 4800k to even engage VTEC but this morning on the way to work I was having a little fun with a co-worker and I had a feeling this pos D16Z6 was lacking in power. Well thanks "VTAK" for screwing me over
