Icon2 Why Does My Car Only Start When It Wants To?

I have a 92 cx that as of now still has the original engine. Im saving up for a gsr and hoping this engine will get me by in the mean time. It has been working fine except burning some oil until now. The other day I was driving and stopped at my house to pick up something quick, then when I went to leave the car wouldnt even turn over. I had my friend give me a jump and it started. The headlights were off, the dome was off, nothing that I could tell was on (the dash light did go out recently but im not sure if that could be it). Then I shut off the car and restarted it just to make sure it was good. Then I drove to walmart and when I got back it was dead again. So me and my friend push started it and drove off. Now it seems to start every time again. I didnt change anything from the time it kept dying to now but for now it works. I cant have it do this again and risk being late for work....anyone have an idea of the problem? Im thinking it must be some sort of massive short.

Thanks In Advance

Check voltage at the battery with the engine off...
Check voltage at the battery cranking...
Check voltage at the battery with the engine running at 2k to 3k rpms...
Let us know what you find.
