Ok I just installed a custom grind Delta 272 on my F22a1 and I need some help with it. First off I cant get it to idle properly. I made the mistake of getting this cam being automatic but It was a good price on it so its all good. As I right now I have the cam gear set on retard of 4 degrees. Thats how I got it and figured thats how the guy I bought it from was running it. Does anybody know what degrees everybody is running on these things? Need some straight up help.

 

I have no personal experience with the 272 but I'm pretty sure that you need to get your car tuned if you want it to run correctly. Specially if you want a decently smooth idle. The 272 cam is very well know for having a rougher idle. As for the timing of the cam gear. Again that all depends on what your tuner sets it too. I have read that people run them with the cam gear with 3° of timing retard. But that is with a tuned ECU.

From threads and builds that I have read the 272 isn't exactly a bolt on mod that runs up to potential with stock ECU. You will probably need a tunable engine management system to get the proper performance out of that cam.

Have you checked/adjusted your valves to run with the 272?

 

I have adjusted valves to factory specs. I have been told to advance the cam at least4 degrees. Was also told that you HARDLY ever have to retard a cam. I am going to advance it tomorrow and hopefully its going to run a little better.

What is your idle doing? Is it stalling? Are your RPMs bouncing? Are your RPMs High or Low The only description you gave for your problem was that you can't get it to idle properly. With this cam and no tunable EMS your not going to get it to idle smooth at 750rpm.

 

Please do yourself a favor and set the cam gear to zero, then don't touch it until you get an tuneable EMS and put the car on a dyno.

 

Right now its set on advanced 2 degrees and is actually starting to idle at stop lights and pull pretty good. I do have a hiccup down low but I need a basemap from somebody so I can have my chip burnt so I can take my happy *** 85 miles to the dyno. I looked into SAFC but I dont have a clue as to how to use it and everybody is telling me I cant have my p75 tuned because its a manual ecu and my car is auto and crome doesnt support it at the dyno I am going to.

 

Stop everything you are doing.

I am going to be 100% honest with you. If you continue doing what you're doing (throwing random parts on without knowing what they're doing or how to use them) you ARE going to blow that motor up or seriously damage it.

I have not looked into modifying an automatic myself but I'd imagine if you have only one ECU and not a TCU as well you may run into issues.

You need to consult a tuner.

 

BAHAHA that motor will never pop. I have been beating the dog **** out of that beast since 2005 and I cant get it to blow. But I am heading to the tuner on next friday and it going to get it tuned and running real good. My wagon has an external TCU so its able to be tuned unlike an auto Civic.

Yea I know...I dont have the best feeling about it myself but I dont have anything to drive. I will be heading to the dyno soon...hopefully my truck with do me right until then. Does anybody have a basemap I can get so I can burn it onto a chip? I am going to hate running it 85 miles to the dyno and it blows up before I get there.

 

A stock motor on a bad basemap is not going to 'blow up' on the way to the dyno, but swinging around the cam timing like you're doing without checking clearances is a surefire way to jack up the valves/head/pistons/cylinder walls.
